Swim
Comments: The water felt warmer than the air temp so once I was in, it was a huge relief. I went out easy, trying to find my pace. I'd been shivering so much before getting in the water, my muscles felt stiff and fatigued just from that. By the time I was past the first buoy, I felt more normal and was able to focus on extending my reach. Was never able to find anyone to draft off. There was some chop way out there and I could smell petrol funes. Wasn't sure if the chop was from the boat activity or just the weather. Had to do more of an exagerated roll to get air. What would you do differently?: When I rounded the last buoy I went too wide. I couldn't find the line of buoys into shore for sighting so tried to sight off of a building. Unfortunately, I picked a building too far to the left. I think this added 90-120 seconds onto my time, trying to get headed back to the dock. Transition 1
Comments: First race with wetsuit strippers - they are awesome! By the time I was out of the water, there was patchy blue sky and the air was a little warmer. I figured I could tolerate anything for 15 miles, so I didn't bother with arm warmers or socks. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Just rode down in my tri tank and shorts like I'd originally planned. My hands and feet weren't cold. I'd warmed up in the water. The road was wet but didn't feel dangerous like some people in earlier waves seemed to experience. I think I was surrounded by good riders. Everyone looked like safe bike handlers. We all just wanted to get to town as quickly as possible. What would you do differently?: I had a big problem with my Speedfil tube. The tube is partially covered with material to prevent scraping on the bike frame. But once it sat out in the rain, that wet material weighed down the tube and it kept falling out of reach. Once it fell out and almost got stuck in my front spokes. Give the short distance, I just grabbed the tube and held on until T2. In a longer event, I would have had to stop and fix it. Haven't liked the Speedfil anyway so it's time to do something new. Transition 2
Comments: Took it slow here. Just wanted to think through everything. Put socks on with the running shoes. Was really glad to see my mom on the way in to T2. She and my boyfriend had gotten the word that the bike had been shortened so they made it there in time to see me come in. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Sadly, this is a good run for me. The run is my worst event. I simply cannot relax into the stride. I can only imagine how bad this would have been if I'd done the full bike. No particular problems. What would you do differently?: I was generally undertrained for this race. More dedication to my workouts would have helped, particularly on the run. Post race
Warm down: Just wanted to get into dry clothes and out of the wind. What limited your ability to perform faster: Undertrained. Event comments: I would do this race again. Too bad about the weather, but the race directors have to make the decision based on their ability to deal with a diverse group of athletes under the conditions. Didn't understand what the difficulty was with collecting our gear bags. I've done Vineman twice, which is also a point to point race, and never had such confusion in getting my T1 gear bag at the end of the race. Great volunteers in Boise and generally a great atomosphere and experience. Last updated: 2012-01-23 12:00 AM

I chose this race because my mom lives in Boise and she has wanted to see me race. I think she's been more excited in the weeks leading up to this event than I have. I'd gotten her a shuttle ticket for the morning, but given the weather, I didn't want her to stand in the rain and cold that long. It was really difficult to convince her to stay home that morning and just let my boyfriend take her to T2 to watch me come in on the bike.
I think I had a light breakfast early in the morning and a honey stinger as soon as set up my bike gear but it's hard to recall anything except how cold it was.
Hahahaha!
Seriously, like everyone else I stood around shivering in my wetsuit until Wave 10 finally got into the water. At the time, I wasn't terribly disappointed when the announcement came about the bike being reduced to 15 miles.
On the boat ramp, we watched 3 athletes being brought in on boats. Kept reminding myself to relax because OWS in any condition is largely mental.
