Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:45am. Ate a banana and a whole wheat bagel with p-nut butter.
Event warmup:

Just tried to keep warm standing outside waiting to swim. Thankfully there was a cvered pavillion right next to the outdoor pool because it starting raining as soon as the race started.
Swim
  • 06m 15s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

Pool was heated but I froze waiting for my start time. Didn't get passed and gained on but didn't pass the swimmer in front of me. I guess we all estimated our 300M times with the same level of accuracy.
What would you do differently?:

Bring warm clothes. I could have left a jacket on one of the tables underneath the pavillion and picked it up after the race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

The run to T1 was brutal on the concrete and rough asphalt path. I ran hard and my feet were hurting. They are still sore 24 hrs later. I decided not to clip my tri shoes into the pedals. I had not practiced much, the ground was wet, and I was pretty close to the bike out area.
What would you do differently?:

Toughen up feet more before hand. Practice with shoes clipped in.

  • 17.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Cold, wet, raining hard at times. It was pretty bad. I don't think I have ever done a race in such poor conditions. Makes you wonder how many people stayed in bed that morning rather that subject themselves to the pain. Only 2 people passed we on the bike so I felt pretty good about it.
What would you do differently?:

You can't contol the weather.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Almost lost control coming around the last corner toward the dismount area. I had taken my feet out of my shoes but must have shifted my right foot trying to get centered and my foot slipped off. The shoe rotated and struck the ground causing me to steer toward the curb. Good thing I was slowing down. I recovered, left the shoe for a volunteer to pick up, and executed a pretty good flying dismount just before the line.

What would you do differently?:

Practice removing feet from shoes and the flying dismount alot more next season. It is a little scary at times especially when other racers are in the mix.
Run
  • 25m 33s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Feet were numb and it felt like i was running on stumps. About halfway my feet started feeling normal again and I picked up the pace. Only got passed by one person and passed many.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe wool socks would help.
Post race
Warm down:

grabbed a drink of powerade and a slice a pizza and headed out to find my lost tri shoe. The volunteer at the turn took me to the RMS person who had it for safekeeping. After that I went into the TA and got my GA Tech sweatshirt. I was partially wet and I made the mistake of putting it over my wet singlet so it got wetter. Luckily I also brought a rain poncho and put that on too. I felt much better and ate some more and talked to other athletes and friends. I did keep shivering for another hour or so even while I was in a heated room.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think the weather conditions slowed me down some but overall my performance was actually better than some of my past results at this triathlon venue.

Event comments:

This is usually a great end of season race although it is usually cold at start time. In past years it has been sunny and warmed up after the swim so it has been bearable. I think it might have gotten up to 54 deg during the race.

Course: This is a "snake" swim in a 25 meter pool. All entrants start one at a time, swim up and down lane 1, under the lane line, then repeat in lane 2 until you swim up and down all 6 lanes for a total of 300 meters. Swimmers will start at 15 second intervals. There is an indoor and outdoor 25 meter pool, I swam in the outdoor pool because faster swimmers from bib numbers 1 - 200 started outside.

Course: Bike course is rolling with a mile decent down Robious Road & a balancing uphill climb on Winterfield Road for 1.6 miles ( this is the one people love to talk smack about! ). The remainder of the course rolls through the Salisbury neighborhood, not very hilly at all, and right back onto Robious Rd as you head back to ACAC.

Course: The run is very flat through mostly shaded neighborhoods: Roxshire & Briarwood. This exact course was created back in 2002, but the old Briarwood Triathlon existed at the same venue in the mid 80's! This makes it the longest and oldest standing triathlon venue in Richmond.
