Swim
Comments: Quite crowded at start with all 55+ athletes starting just after the pros. Current pushing into shore posed navigation issues and a few collisions occurred. I remember hitting someone's jaw next to my hip as my hand left the water and two people swimming into me as was 20 yards from the second buoy. My stroke felt strong and probably could have pushed a bit harder. Transition 1
Comments: Big T area organized by age groups so my row was a bit crowded. Put on bike shorts on top of tri shorts for extra padding. Felt good and jumped on bike but my leg knocked out a water bottle behind seat which flew into the bushes at mount line. I later got a yellow card penalty for this, by WTC official for discarding objects on course!!!! WTF, are you kidding. What would you do differently?: Not put water behind seat. Bike
Comments: Started out conservatively and was staying between 19-20 most of the way. Had to stop at first penalty tent for about 2 minutes because of losing a water bottle at mount line. That cost about 100 spots. Took and drank 2 bottles of water at aid stations. Also had 1 bottle of Heed, 2 Hammer gels, and 4 S-Caps on ride. It was getting hot. What would you do differently?: More miles of training at higher wattage. Transition 2
Comments: Craig Alexander had just finished his race when I arrived so knowing that I still had the run was a bit discouraging. Really felt the heat when I stopped. I don't know why this took so long but it was a long distance from T area to run start for some reason. Run
Comments: Really poor run. Only had enough for a 50/50 run walk ratio at best. Tried to manage heat with lots of water, ice, and gatorade at every stop but still was incredibly dehydrated. Saw 2 people lying down. Would run until my feet got too hot (K Swiss shoes too thin?) or felt a little dizziness in second half. What would you do differently?: Much more run training and more brick sessions. Train more in the heat. Post race
Warm down: Got drenched by a fire hose and drank 2 bottles of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of hard training, 10 pounds overweight, and the hot weather. Event comments: I was not fully ready for the distance and conditions of this race. Last updated: 2012-02-01 12:00 AM
