Swim
Comments: Really thought 6:30 was achievable, but apparently not today. Still a swim PR by 13 seconds per 100 meters so I'll take it. What would you do differently?: I paused for a couple breaths at the wall, which probably wasn't necessary. Only been swimming in a 25 yard pool lately. Transition 1
Comments: Wrestled my bike stuff out of plastic bag #1. Tried to test BG, but meter errored out due to rain. Decided to pull on a light jacket...after I put my bike helmet on. Good thing I'm not worried about looking silly! Put garmin on and off I went. Conditions were such that I didn't really worry too much about T times. What would you do differently?: Test while riding next time. Duct taped meter to bar and it held just fine. Bike
Comments: I tried mounting a "let's skip the bike leg" campaign, but failed to get enough signatures in time :). Was very nervous about biking in the wet conditions since I've never ridden in the rain before. Thankfully the rain slacked off for the actual ride time, but roads were very wet. Very timid at first, so kept it slow, but gradually built up some confidence on the straightaways. Stayed very slow in the turns...just not worth it to me to risk crashing given my lack of bike fitness anyways. What would you do differently?: Not much as far as this race given the conditions and my lack of rainy day experience. But riding my bike more than once in a blue moon is definitely needed! Transition 2
Comments: Tried to test again...still not working due to damp conditions...ate a couple of shot blocks just in case. Putting running shoes on top of soaking wet socks, blech! What would you do differently?: Hope for a nicer day next time. Really didn't get in a huge hurry. Run
Comments: Felt strong throughout the run. It was like a celebration of getting through the bike! A 5K PR for me, so I'll take it. What would you do differently?: Grabbed a drink both ways at the aid station, and didn't really need it. Feel like I could have gone a bit harder in mile 2. Post race
Warm down: Mill around and talk to a few folks. Still didn't know what my BG was, so decided to throw caution to the wind and have a small pancake and a little hot cocoa. Wound up sky high, but enjoyed it nonetheless. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of bike fitness (almost no riding in the last few months), zero experience riding in rain + slow transitions. Not sorry about being cautious today though. Event comments: Enjoyed this race in spite of the conditions. So thankful to the volunteers for being out there in the rain! Up at 4:30 (or was it 3:30 -- springing forward today), normal bkfst, head over to Keller. It was raining, so transition setup included breaking out the plastic garbage bags I had brought. Chatted with a couple of first timers, Jeff F, and Missy A.
Absolutely none. Swam a couple laps to warm up at my last tri and then nearly froze waiting to start (standing near a door). Not doing that again!
