Pre-race routine:

Woke up a little after 5am. Tried to eat some cereal, but too early for my body to deal with food so only had about 3 bites. Shower. Made some toast with PB to eat on the drive. Left home about 6:10am. Got to Salem VIP lot (woo hoo) about 7:10am. PLENTY of time to set up and wander about. Finally ate my toast with PB, and drank water all morning.
Event warmup:

Took FOREVER to get the wetsuit on after the prerace mtg. Was going to swim a little bit, but barely had time to get wet before having to be at the start line. (Next time get suit part way on before mtg.) Felt good though and didn't really feel rushed. Had a Gu about 15 mins before swim start.
Swim
  • 21m 37s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was VERY happy that I didn't have a panic attack. I knew what my pace should feel like, and was comfortable breathing on both sides (mostly). Overall happy with the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Arms got pretty darn tired. I need more swim endurance!
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

First race with a 'normal' transition. I felt like I had a very good transition. Wetsuit came off easily.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 46m 1s
  • 12 miles
  • 15.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Long swim followed by two steep hills kept me breathing hard for the first 3 miles or so. Finally caught my breath and felt decent for the rest of the bike. Bike handling was good, I was able to get to my water bottle and drink much more easily than last race. Hands more comfortable on hoods with small adjustment to angle. Gu chomps worked ok (took 4 at about 10 mile point), hard to chew with a dry mouth though.
What would you do differently?:

I really need hill practice. Otherwise I was pretty happy with the bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

The transition area was very long, so though my actual transition from bike shoes to run shoes was fast, my legs were dead so I could barely run through the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Need to run off bike better. Bricks? More training?
Run
  • 36m 36s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

I walked a lot of the first half, legs just so tired. Sun had come out so was also a bit hot. Hit aid station and then felt fine and could run the rest of the way in.
What would you do differently?:

I shouldn't have to walk so much. Need more training. Otherwise I think nutrition was right on.
Post race
Warm down:

Watermelon, oranges, water at the finish line. Wandered around, laid in the shaded grass for a while. Didn't leave for about 45 mins.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm actually fairly happy with my times, they are near what I was predicting. Though, it is disappointing that I was last or near last in each category. I'm never going to be really fast, but more training will certainly help.

Event comments:

A great race. Nicely put together. Many volunteers. Good food at the finish line, massages too though I didn't stop to get one.
