Run
Comments: Overall my first run went well. In comparison to the others, they were very fast but I thought I had a good overall pace. At about the 4-5 km mark there was a fork in the trail with no sign of which way to take. Following the guy in front of me was a big mistake. We went left but should have gone right. We figured it was about a 1-2 minute mistake. What would you do differently?: Possibly have more nutrition on the run. You will see why.... Transition 1
Comments: Transition went well. On my way to the bike I went through the process in my head what I needed to do in transition. The run was pretty far and slightly uphill to the mouting line. What would you do differently?: Possibly take in a gel shot Bike
Comments: Here is where it went well and then the wheels fell off. I started out well. Was doing an avg. of 30 km/h for the first 10 km's. I felt as though I was mashing the pedals and not spinning smoothly. After the half way point I decided to try spinning smoothly and change my foot angle a bit....BAD MOVE. My right calf cramped up HARD. I looked down and could see the muscle severly cramped up and couldn't move it. I didn't know what to do. I decided to get off the bike and I pulled off onto the side of the road and sit down. I took off my helmet and was PISSED. I sat there massaging the miscle to see if it would help. It felt better. I stretched it out and felt ok. I was going to have my first DNF but with my wife and son waiting for me at the finish line I was going to try to see if I could at least bike back. I jumped on the bike and was able to get back. I stretched frequently to help. I used my quads a lot more in order to relax my calves. I made it back with my wife and son cheering me on even though I was one of the last ones to come back. What would you do differently?: Relax on the bike a little bit. I believe I went too hard and too fast too soon. Stop mashing the pedals and spin spin spin. Transition 2
Comments: Due to the cramps I took my time in transition. I stretched and put my compressioncalf sleeves on (which I was planning on doing but should have put it on for the bike portion!). Got my cheering from my wife and son and it was enough motivation to get me through the next 4km..even if i had to walk! What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: This was painful. My calves and quads were slightly cramping on me. But I was determined to finish. My time wasn't that bad and was possibly a pace I should have started out with. What would you do differently?: Due to the circumstances I think my time was alright. Post race
Warm down: FOOD! I was hungry. I sat down and played with my 2 year old son. I will always have energy for him. What limited your ability to perform faster: CRAMPS! It absolutely killed me. I almost quit and almost had my first DNF. I either have to improve my fitness or figure out my nutrition. Event comments: My only complaint is the fork in the trail/bush that isn't marked. Other than that it was a nice event. First one with MSC. Last updated: 2012-02-02 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5 and had a normal breakfast (eggs, bagel, soy milk).
Able to go to the bathroom and relieve myself, twice! I could tell I had the pre-race jitters
Got to the race very late. Got lost getting there and was only 30 minutes before the start. I was having GPS issues with my watch, it wasn't catching satelites and everything was very rushed. A sign of things to come...
