Run
Comments: It was a "freezing" cold day for Florida. Started at 6:30 and was about 30 degrees with quite a cold wind. Felt good strength-wise but felt cooold - especially the three miles on the beach with a freaking cold wind whipping in our faces! Didn't even shed my gloves until about mile 10. Never really got much warmer than 40 degrees! It started an hour earlier than last year. I wondered why but then someone said it was because of the tides ... they had to make sure it would be low tide when we were running on the beach for 3 miles! Last year the beach was my favorite part. This year it was freaking freezing!!!! A bright, clear day, but that wind ... it was painful. Felt good until about mile 15, then we started wondering if we'd even finish. By mile 20 we were in such pain, it didn't really matter if we walked or ran -- we had pains when we walked and different pains when we ran. Poor Danielle had fallen down the stairs a few weeks ago and her hip was very painful by then. My knee/IT band was giving me fits .. hurt something wicked! Our feet were numb and everything else below the waist was in pain! What would you do differently?: Train more! Be sure to get two 20 mile runs in before the race -- possibly even go up to 24 miles. Plus I'd get more mileage on the shorter runs during the week. I do a run/walk and when we paced with the Galloway pacers they walked a whole lot faster than I usually do. So I've got to increase my walk speed. My run speed was fine but I guess I walk too slowly. Danielle says I seem to almost stop - haha. So now my goal is to seriously work on walking faster! Post race
Warm down: We were within the last 100 people to finish (out of about 10,000 but many of these were doing the half), so they were breaking down by the time we got through the line. That was stinky if you ask us. We said the people that hobbled in after 6 or 7 hours were probably first timers and were miserable but we didn't even get to partake in the after-race festivities! What limited your ability to perform faster: The biggest limiter for me was that I suck at running! haha BUT I finished and that's all I was shooting for! I doubt I'll ever do another one, but I'm 55 years old and I can cross that off my bucket list! Event comments: The only reason I didn't give this a 5 on the rating for the race was 1) the transportation sucked again (like last year) and 2) they should have "festivities" for the slow-bees like me! Woke up at 4:00. My daughter Danielle and I did this race together. We had done the half last year and it was such fun that we decided (crazily) that we'd do the full this year. We stayed at a hotel at which the shuttle stopped so we thought that would enable us to get there on time. (We were almost late last year.) But the transportation still sucked! And we didn't get there until about 6:00. The race started at 6:30.
No warmup other than trying to keep from freezing while standing in the line to catch the shuttle.
