Swim
Comments: After being in the rain & wind so long the water was actually an improvement in temperature. How weird is that? Waded out with the AG and swam to the start line. Felt weird, horn went off started swimming, I felt like nothing was working. Really disoriented didn't know where I was swam in the wrong direction for a minute and was drinking a lot of water from the waves. Finally stopped for a minute and treaded water, looked at where I needed to go, and then breast stoked for about 4 buoy's. Started to feel better like I knew what I was doing & why I was here. Switched back to crawl at the 1st turn, felt like I wasn't going anywhere but kept at it. Had a lot of trouble with the waves & timing my breathing but by the 3rd turn things where finally starting to click. I'm amazed at how good the time was when I came out. What would you do differently?: DNS -> There is no reason why I should have gotten in the water! Transition 1
Comments: Came out of the water & headed to the wet suit strippers. Laid down on my back they pulled the wetsuit off and my left calf cramped big time. As I straightened out my leg, they started massaging it so that it would stop and my right calf cramped even worse (you could see it bulging). They where wonderful and where massaging both of my legs, but recommended that maybe my day was over. About that time my abdomen cramped, but not as bad. I just laid there for about a minute and said, no,no I can make it! The cramps stopped after a minute or so. Got to the bike, talk about disoriented, all I remember for sure is that my feet & hands where frozen, and I was scared to go down the hill from the dam like this. Some how I was able to get on my winter JFT jersey shoes, helmet... What would you do differently?: See above should have been a DNS! Bike
Comments: It was raining when I came down the Dam hill, and I was holding on to my brakes most of the way. Worried that the cramps would visit again, thankfully they didn't. On the bike path I hit a groove that almost flipped my bike, I screamed and freaked out a bunch of riders around me, but was able to keep the bike upright. (I heard that someone went down later in the day there) Rest of the bike was cold, wet, until the downtown area where the sun was trying to come out. Felt like February but I was wearing shorts!!! What would you do differently?: Hope for better weather? Figure out a way to call my wife and tell here that the course changed as she was waiting out at the 2nd nutrition stop until they saw that Lindsey Corbin had started the run via her twitter account and she hadn't seen anyone ride by!!! Transition 2
Comments: OK, so my feet where frozen stumps. I was trying to run with the bike, it wasn't pretty. Got to my spot and luckily had put a pair of compression socks in a zip lock bag and they where dry compared to the socks that I was currently wearing which where soaked from the ride (I was completely soaked too). However, trying to change socks with feet that are frozen stumps just doesn't work, really struggled here, and also my abductor cramped but stretching out my leg would keep it from cramping further. What would you do differently?: Actually except for the cramps & frozen feet it was going better! Run
Comments: Didn't feel my feet until mile 7. However at mile 2 I had a deer run across the running path and that really brought up my attitude! I am apparently allergic to something on that trail, as my snot was coming out in record amounts and by mile 10 my face was a mess. I couldn't blow snot rockets fast enough. Couldn't breathe well after mile 11 so walked some until I could get under control again. was able to slog (slower than a jog but not walking) through the last mile! What would you do differently?: See above DNS! Post race
Warm down: I couldn't stop shaking/shivering at the end of the race. The medical folks wanted to take me into the tent, and I declined. Sandi was right there and got me to the car and put blankets on me, while she rounded up the stuff. Then we headed for the hotel, and I got in the hot tub, where I found a small group of IM folks getting warm as well. What limited your ability to perform faster: Hypothermia Event comments: The bad rating is for the weather. I understand that it was snowing on part of the race course (Micron area) when we were at the dam. Course itself is a nice course, and Boise is a great place to race (well supported). Suspect I'll go back and try it again. Last updated: 2012-02-03 12:00 AM

Day before the race went and rode the Mt. Pleasant road out to the 10 mile creek turn around, so that I could see the biggest hill on the course. IT was windy & rainy so thought I would be prepared. Ran 2 miles of the run course. No issues.
Warmup would be the key here, wish i could have. Took the 9:45 bus out to the lake (it wasn't raining in Boise at that time) When I got to Lucky peak it was 43 degrees & raining sideways with a 15+ mile an hour wind. Felt like hail for a few minutes too. Set up the bike as best I could, immediately put on the wetsuit to attempt to stay warm but only had flip-flops for feet wear. Froze constant shivering, mouth wouldn't stay calm. Tried to do squats, other devices to stay warm & it didn't work. Huddled with everyone on the side of the Morning clothes truck to attempt to stay out of the wind. Around 11 am they announced that WTC was shortening the bike to 15 miles for safety due to hypothermia concerns and that the race would start later (20 minutes or so)
