Swim
Comments: Started in the middle of the front line. Got off to a good start and cleared ahead of most people, but saw a few other orange caps off to the side. After about 200 yards, slowed down to my race pace. I held a good line getting to the turn. Started seeing a lot of people from the first wave and worked my way around them. Still felt pretty good. I really like swimming in Newfound Lake - its very clear and easy to see other people. I had more difficulty sighting on the way back and took too wide of a line back. Kept trying to turn left, but every time I looked up I was still too far right. Picked up pace with around 200 yards to go. Overall, this was a good swim and I didnt feel too tired when I exited. What would you do differently?: Not much. Still need to work on sighting and picking a better line. Transition 1
Comments: Had top off (Wetsuit is a 2 piece) before I made it to the wetsuit strippers. I Was a little worried how this would go since this was my first race with this wetsuit. No trouble with bottom either. Good to go. Ran up to where bike was racked. Thought about putting wind breaker on, but saw that it was soaked. I then tried to put on my arm warmers, but couldn't get them on so ditched them (how cold could it be??). Put on bike shoes and helmet and headed out of transition. Was able to hop on bike and get clipped in and off on the bike. But this transition took much longer than it should have. Bike
Comments: ok, I knew I was in trouble once I got going. It was much colder than I thought and the rain was picking up. Tried to ignore it the best I could, but I was getting pretty cold. With 10 miles to go, I lost enough feeling in my arms and hands that I had a real hard time shifting. My legs also started to feel numb and it was hard to really motivate myself. My power and HR were way off my targets. Decided to not push it too hard and see if I can still have a good run. Looking back, probably a good decision. I was 2:20 slower than last year. What would you do differently?: Look into better options for arm warmers, gloves and rain jacket that I can put on quickly and dont flap n the wind too much. Also make sure I put them in something to keep the dry in T1. Transition 2
Comments: Dismount went fairly well and ran to rack. But I had a real hard time unbuckling my helmet. My hands and fingers were too numb. Was also hard to get shoes on. What would you do differently?: If I wore gloves and arm warmers it could have been easier to remove helmet. Run
Comments: Overall, this was a good run for me. Basically ran negative splits and finished strong. HR still seemed very low. Cut 2:10 from last years time. Still lots of room for improvement though. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, drank water, talked to friends. Was getting really cold so grabbed a foil blanket (those things really work) and then headed to warming tent. Event comments: All things considered, this was still a good race for me. First time finishing 1st in my AG for an Olympic distance race. The post race food still sucks. Glad they sell hot chocolate though. The race was very well run and the volunteers were great. I really do like this race venue, but dont like having to check-in the night before. It also seems to rain a lot this time of year. Last updated: 2012-02-06 12:00 AM

I decided to try Mooseman again this year. I still don't like that you have to check-in the night before and stay overnight, but I really like the course and its a good race to keep me focused on early season training. As the race was getting closer, I was getting nervous about the weather. I didnt want a repeat of 2 years ago. It wasnt looking good. Forecast was calling for heavy rain and passing thunder storms and cooler temperatures. I was also starting to feel a cold/flu coming on a few days before the race (my daughter also came down with Strep throat on Wed so this added to my concern). I really thought about skipping the race, but decided to go up and see how I felt. Took Wed, Thur and Fri off from training leading up to the race.
Drove up to Wellington Park on Fri night to check in and then headed to Towne Place Suites in Gilford. Stopped at store to pick up food and water. Ate dinner at Papa Gino's (chicken parm sub and side salad). Not best choice, but didnt feel like searching around and I knew what to expect here.
4:00am - woke up (never really slept but got out of bed at 4am).
4:15am - Made Coffee and took shower
4:30am - Ate 2 instant oatmeals, yogurt and coffee
4:45am - filled water bottles and packed car
5:00am - drove to race - ate bagel with peanut butter on the way.
5:50am - arrived at parking lot and headed to transition
6:20am - set up transition. realized I wasnt really prepared for the cold and rain.
6:40am - put on wetsuit and headed to start. Wanted to get a warm up in first.
Swam for 10min before start.
