Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:50. Really never went to sleep. Took quick shower, made coffee and instant oatmeal and a yogurt. Oatmeal seems to sit with me much better than a bagel so this is my new pre-race meal.

Headed to transition (short bike ride from hotel). Set up transition area and talked with friends. Put on wetsuit and headed to pond for quick warmup.

This is the 2nd of 3 races that are part of the Lord of the Flies event. I also really wanted to podium for this race, but came up a little short this year. There were a few really fast people in my AG this year.
Event warmup:

swam last half of swim course. Made sure I knew line to take on final turns. Ate a gel while getting ready for start.
Swim
  • 06m 48s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

Since I had a low bib #, I was one of the first to start. Got off to a quick start and was passing a few people in the first 30 seconds. Stayed a little to the right as everyone seemed to be bunching up closer to the buoys. Never really seemed to get into a rhythm. This course has too many turns and people to swim around.
Transition 1
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Had top off quickly, but a little trouble getting bib johns down enough so wetsuit strippers could remove rest.
Bike
  • 53m 49s

  • 23.41 mile/hr
Comments:

Tried to not go out as hard on downhill like I did yesterday. This is a great way to start a bike leg though - all downhill for first 10 miles. Felt pretty good on climb back up to transition. Its always demotivating when the radar clock says you are only going 12-14 mph. I wish they would turn it off for the race.

Total – 261W / 23.15mph / 1.04 VI / 87 RPM
First Half – 246W / 28.54 mph /1.06 VI / 89 RPM
Second Half - 274W / 19.27 mph / 1.02 VI / 85 RPM

This was also my first race using the torpedo mount. I like this much better than using the profile design bottle with the straw between the bars. not as much sloshing around and getting over everything. Its also much easier to set up.

Overall, I was happy with my bike split. Was about 50 seconds faster than last year. Need to work on keeping cadence a little higher. I did a little better with the sprint race the next day.

Transition 2

Comments:

Uneventful T2.
Run
  • 35m 2s
  • 5 miles
  • 07m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile is always the hardest. Felt good for mile 2. at the middle of mile 3 I started to get a cramp in my side and had a harder time breathing. Slowed down a little to see if it helped. It died down a little but still felt the cramp. Clint passed me at mile 4 and I tried to hang on, but fell off after a minute or so. Tried to minimize the damage as best as I could though.

I ran 1:39 faster than last year.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a hard time cooling down. Talked with Clint and others. Drank a few waters and a muscle milk. The sun was really hot so tried to stay in shade the best I could.

Event comments:

It was a good race this year. Food still needs work though.
