Total Time = 6h 20m
Overall Rank = 92/444
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 20/61
Pre-race routine:

cereal, banana, coffee
Event warmup:

long walk from transition to swim start
Swim
  • 40m 17s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went pretty well, I seeded myself towards the back so I wouldn’t get run over at the 1st buoy and that worked out well. I kept a decent rhythm and felt fast after rounding the last buoy and coming in to shore. I finished in 40:17 which put my 42nd in my division. This is a pretty average swim for me, I was pretty happy during the long run into transition, knowing I was on-pace to break 5:30 again.

Transition 1
  • 04m 10s
Comments:

long (1/4-1/3 of mile) run into transition
went great, passed 8 people in age-group in T1
Bike
  • 2h 38m 3s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Over the 1st 20 miles I averaged almost 22 mph while passing 75 people (11 in my division). I ate my Clif bar at mile 10 and a gel at mile 20 while sipping on some Gatorade from the aero-bottle. I kept blasting the bike and worked my way along, growing frustrated at some of the drafting going on, but sticking to my plan and not getting caught up in any shenanigans.Coming into transition, I was averaging 21.4 mph and had moved up to 17th in my division. Nice pickup from 42nd out of the water (need to get some swim speed this winter).
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

T2 was uneventful, dropping off the bike and hitting the run course.
Run
  • 1h 50m 48s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was a blast at first, went out hard felt good, but then quickly realized I wasn’t holding any fluid down, I kept spitting it back out, not ideal to say the least. It was getting hot out so I pulled the top of my tri-suit down around my waist and threw water over my head and on my chest at each aid station. Now this part of the race went into my hometown of Scarborough and as we went over the bridge on the Eastern Trail I got a little emotional. My mom passed away from Leukemia when I was in college and I was thinking of her because in high school we had taken a lunar eclipse canoe trip through the very marsh I was now running over.
Post race

Event comments:
