Swim
Comments: Was a little worried since I had heard all the bumping can be unnerving, but I was fine with it. Also was nervous since I broke the mantra "nothing new on race day" with a new type of goggle (not just new pair). Wider lenses to help side vision (almost mask like). They worked great, and an added bonus- since they were brand new, I had zero fog issues! Sweet!! What would you do differently?: Practice more. Probably can count on both hands the number of swim workouts I have done. Coming from a swim background, I have a good base of swim mechanics and focused my training on my weaker areas. Transition 1
Comments: Used toe cages instead of clips, rode in my running shoes. Wet sandy feet made putting socks on hard, helmet felt loose, probably due to wet hair. Had Gatorade on bike. What would you do differently?: Bring a soft brush to remove sand from between toes. For my first tri I am happy with this transition time. Bike
Comments: Lots of locals cheering everyone on. I tried to say encouraging words to these I passed. Course felt slightly up hill both ways, had a strong breeze blowing so I'm sure that played into it. What would you do differently?: Practice cornering at speed. Slowed down a lot, nervous about crashing. Also, I must have caged my right foot too tightly because it was totally numb 3/4 into the race. Transition 2
Comments: Rode with running shoes on, so was just racking and helmet off. Long way from dismount to my rack, but then was close to run out. What would you do differently?: Not much different to do, maybe practice running and pushing my bike. Run
Comments: Lots of spectators cheering us on, some had sprinklers set up. Drink stations, misting fans, and ice towels were awesome. What would you do differently?: Pretty hot and tired by this point. Plan to add 2 hour long workouts into training. Hoped to do 9:30 pace I was too hot and tired to do so. Didn't walk any, and that was one personal goal. Need to remove sand from toes, got a small blister on one toe and the grit didn't help any. Post race
Warm down: Ate a banana and drank water and gatorade. It was about 90 degrees by that point. Felt a little dizzy but did ok. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not training for 2 hour lengths. Most of my workouts are between 45 min to 1 hour 15. Little ones at home make longer workouts hard to fit in. Event comments: Didn't stay for all the activities but they sounded nice. Would have appreciated access to the beach house to change but the park was open to the public by that point so they weren't letting racers inside. Last updated: 2012-02-07 12:00 AM

Pushed fluids day before, pasta for dinner. Early to bed (10ish).
Woke at 0400, ate some Greek yogurt with granola. Left home at 0430 (hubby drove), noshed some cherries and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the way. Pushed more fluids. Arrival at 0530, transition set up arranged by wave group. Scoped out bike and run in/out areas. Cheered on first age group waves as they ran into transition. Then hurry up and wait! Wave didn't go until about 0824.
Light stretching, and numerous trips to pee ;-). I had visited the beach earlier in the week so I knew where the real toilets were located. Most people stood in long lines for the porta-potties, but the beach house had very short lines. Yay!
