Swim
Comments: At least we seeded well--there was 0 passing necessary in our lane. Drafted first few laps behind Andy (ClimbingGonzo) and then fell back. Was shooting for right at 9 minutes, but wasn't too worried about 15 or 20 seconds in pool which could be a big difference in effort. As it was I was working harder than I should have been at that speed. Man I would have like a warmup. Pretty decent pacing. First 100 was 1:23. What would you do differently?: Better warmup. Remember to start Garmin. Transition 1
Comments: Didn't have shoes on bike. Haven't done that in a few years, and without practice spend way too long trying to get into them. Straps on shoes came out of buckle when sliding my foot in, took a few extra seconds each foot. What would you do differently?: Be more mentally prepared. Bike
Comments: Once again could not find rhythm or get comfortable in aero bars. There was a flat, straight section on a bike path that enabled me to get a little more comfortably with my effort level, so 2nd half was better (mentally) than first half. Knees took a long time (5-6 miles) to warm up. What would you do differently?: Still need to figure out how to be more comfortable with accepting my whatever effort I'm capable of on a given day instead of always trying to push and then blowing up and getting frustrated. Transition 2
Comments: Due to the wet or just fatigue, couldn't get my right foot out of the shoe, so by the dismount line I had one foot out and one foot still in shoe. Had to take other shoe off before I could run. Didn't have shoes with quick laces, so lost a few seconds there. What would you do differently?: Get my feet out earlier. Have my race shoes along. Run
Comments: Settled into a good pace almost immediately. Little bit of stomach cramps about 1.75 miles in--probably from the cup of Heed I drank at the start of run. Last .4 started to really pick it up to try and catch guy ahead of me. Caught him, but couldn't hold on a faded into the finish. Solid negative split for run, and probably one of the better runs off the bike that I've ever had. What would you do differently?: Avoid the heed. Not have shoe come untied (i.e. have my racing flats with speed laces.) Post race
Warm down: None. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of warmup. Poor nutrition and sleep leading into race. Unable to get comfortale on bike and find pace. Overall I had a sub-par ride, and a very good run. Since the run is typically the bigger struggle, I am pleased with the overall race. Event comments: Like the small town feel of this race, but this year seemed under staffed. And they had very little post-race refreshments: they were out of bananas, and I didn't see any drinks, so it was simply apples and oranges. Last updated: 2012-02-07 12:00 AM

Lots of brilliant things like seeing the midnight showing of Avengers on Thursday. No dinner night before. Not much breakfast morning of. Didn't get to be night before. Struggled to get up and get going. Once at race site, set up transition and then waited. And waited. And didn't fuel. And waited. Being in heat 7 meant about an hour and half of waiting.
150 yards in the pool. Not nearly enough, but I still have not figured out how to get a good warmup at this event.
