Pre-race routine:

Started the weekend with a swim across the lake on Saturday morning for Hospice House with Y and Kara. That was about a mile, although I swam with it is still a mile.
To bed early which means 10:30 or so. Up a couple to turn the kid and watch for shooting stars. Saw a couple, tonight is the big night they say. 5:30 came without a good rest had. I got the bikes loaded while Y made oatmeal. Loaded and on road by 6:05. Hour or so ride to Sodus Point. About 3/4 of the way there we come over a rise and there is a horse along the side of the road but not in the fence. He is jogging out into the road but mainly wants back in to fenced area. We stop at the house and Y runs up to the house and starts knocking. I getting ready to call the sheriff but the guy comes to the door in his boxers is like what?
Soon he has his daughters out and they are corralling the horse. Mike test me at that time to ask if we are there yet. No we are chasing a horse. ?. With that under control with head on, good deed done for the day! get there with plenty of time. Y gets coffee. Mike is right behind us and Cheri is already there. Set up transition all together. Pee and hang out for an hour till race start. I mean with friends not actually hanging out.

Event warmup:

Went to do a few strokes to see how it was feeling. There is a life guard trying to get into a kayak. With 3 foot swells breaking on shore it wasn't easy. At one time she was loss the kayak it went shooting about 30 feet almost into a couple girls. I grab it and hold it so she can get in. Hey another good deed. Take a swim out. Using sleeveless suit and feels a little funny with Old Fart short sleeve jersey on but OK. Wish Y and the girls good luck and watch them go off 5 minutes ahead of us. Mike and I move up front.

Comments:

I have not been in that much fray in a long time. Mixing up all the way till the last 20oyds. We started dead up front and the field was spread way out along shore. The swells continued through the whole way making siting challenging. I was feel someone on the right side I'd head left a little to run into someone else, find out I was being squeezed between them.
We caught the girls on the cross of the triangle. Made it even more interesting. I didn't see Y or anyone although Cheri said she saw be go by her. Y was way out to the right.
Swam up till I hit bottom with my hands. Stood and got washed in by a few waves. Its a long sand run to T1. Not packed but dry and loose. Makes it hard.
What would you do differently?:

Not swim across the lake the day before.
Full sleeve suit.

Comments:

got in to T1 and Kara was waiting for Y drying off her toes. Said hey and went to it. Got a little out of sorts as I was leaving suit and starting to stick my feet into my bike shoes. Oops. Straightened it out and putting sunglasses and helmet on while stomping out of my suit.
Shoes on and out to get moving.
What would you do differently?:

Think suit down stomp, while getting getting glasses on and helmet. Shoes then go. This was my fastest T1 so happy with it.

Comments:

Even without doing much biking this year the bike has felt good and so did this.
I have fatten up some so the hills were killers. I was out front passing here and there and hearing the disk wheels go by. It was pretty open until I hit the second hill, at 6% grade it puts me way right and before the top got passed by a crowd. No one really drafting just bunched up. IN the next two mile get a break and catch. Turn north and get a nice tail wind.
Got my Old fart jersey on for a repeat performance of last year. As we turn the final stretch home I meet and pass a young girl that screams she love the jersey. Give her a quick thanks. Love the final hill in as long and at a good grade. Cruising at 30mph. Gotta thread the cars at final big intersection. Cops and volunteers do a great job at that crossing as the get bikes coming and through and runners turning left.
See what I think is the first guy and yell a little "Show off" "Great job". As hit the little cross road I see the first guy cause he has a bike escort. Let him know the second guy is right behind you move it.
Few old fart cheers and slide in and hit the dismount line. Run in.
What would you do differently?:

learn to climb.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Spent way too much time at last two tris in T2 so concentrating on moving through move smoothly. Need to get shorter laces double knotting is time consuming. No socks. Its a 5K and I can stand any blisters till the end.
What would you do differently?:

Shorter laces.

Comments:

Start out running well. Love my Pearls. Nice little old fart cheer on the way out, nice. the first 1/3 of a mile or so is along the bikes returning. Trying to push hard enough to get to the split before I see Mike, that if he didn't sneak in while I was going out. With 100yds to go Mike turns the corner. Still have some time on him but need to move it along. I love wearing the old fart jersey lots of cheering for me. It two loops of up down, up down, up down. Nice as it puts two rest stops on the course.
Great rest stop same lady and guy as last year.
The lady on the bike who liked my jersey catches up to me and says she has been laughing for the last 15 minutes and she got to pass me back. Yes you did but you started 5 minutes early. At one crossing I get a you are my guy old fart keep it going want to see you back here soon. Turn up the little hill at the beginning of the loop. Take a little walk. Pick a spot to start running again but start before it.
Just before the rest stop a lady runner says I gotta say "Way to go Old Fart". The guy next me ask old do you have to be. I say 53 he says oh I'm 52. My AG yikes and you are passing me. The rest stop lady says take it home. He says on the first loop. Oh good its my second. At least one behind me. The lady with the hose at the top of the next hill I miss as she was not out first loop and I was not paying attention and missed her the second. No pidder padder of Mikes feet. Hit the top of the last little hill and know I can do it. Good cheer from my intersection buddy saying "Great job Old fart push it home."
Last corner got the whole crowd cheering "Great Job Old fart"
It was a great run and pass at 1:28. Took a little to realize I need to subtract 5 minutes so I'll take a 1:23. Nice. Turn back to cheer Mike in.
What would you do differently?:

It was a good run not much.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back to see Mike come in. Drank some water.
Got a big smile and "way to go old fart" I love that shirt from my girl on the bike. She has her mom take a picture of us. That is the great attitude of this tri.
We wait a little and walk back to meet Y and Kara coming. Then wait for Cheri. All in we head to get a hot dog and watermelon. Check results no metals so head home. Uneventful.
Take a nap and mow the lawn.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I took 10 minutes off last years time so not much.

Event comments:

This race is put on by the neighborhood association they have it in. So the volunteers are locals often stepping out their front door to work. Venue is good with a challenging swim most the time in Lake Ontario.
I was glad the Mike came out to play and finished.
Y did great. I was a little worried about her on the swim but yesterdays swim let me know she could handle it. Glad the water wasn't 53 like it was for Hamilton Beach a couple weeks ago.
With a scant 200 competitors its fun.
