Run
Comments: This was only the second time in my life that I've run 5 miles and I only started running seriously again at the start of the new year. I planned on running until I needed to walk and then doing a run/walk combo. My target time was one hour. Turns out that I didn't need to run/walk because I RAN THE WHOLE THING! I couldn't believe it. About mile 3 I knew I would be good cardio wise but I was concerned that my legs wouldn't make it (I'm 6'5" 315lbs). The legs held together and when I hit the 4 mile mark I knew I would finish! I was layered perfectly. I did take my hat off twice because I was starting to heat a little but I was able to cool down quickly in the chilly tempatures. Unfortunately there were no waterstations on the course. It would have been nice to have one at the half way point. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. As I look back over the race I can't find one area physically/mentally that I was disappointed. The thing I wish was different was that for some reason my Garmin never synced up with the satillite so other than total time I had no data for the race. I think if I had had the data I could have come in under my one hour but overall its not that big of a deal. Post race
Warm down: Waited for my buddy who talked me into the race to finish and then we headed for the bar. Beer is good after a race! What limited your ability to perform faster: The cold and the layers. But I think thats the point when you hold a race in Iowa in Feb! Event comments: For my second 5 miles ever this run was great. I gained a lot of confidence and look forward to doing the run for years to come. Last updated: 2012-02-13 12:00 AM

Woke up and got layered up. Thursday before the race I decided to go with 3 layers of clothing, on Friday I decided with the high for Saturday to be around 12 degrees I should probably add a layer. This was a good decision. Made myself a peanut butter and honey sandwich and a energy drink. Left the house and picked up my buddy who talked me into the 5 mile race and made it to the YMCA about an hour before the race.
Not much. We stayed inside the YMCA until it was time to start the race. I decided that "Red Flannel Run" was an old Iowa term for "Look at the Idiots".
