Run
Comments: I Started slow but kept the 8:24 pace group in sight. Overtook them in mile three - they slowed as they were ahead of their pace. Just tried to keep it feeling good. The hill on Torrence was my slowest mile, but I didn't want to burn all my energy. Really felt good after that, and kept everything sub-8 from then on. Saw Jen and Mom and Dad during mile 10. Was feeling great at that point and that was my fastest split. Felt a little fatigue creeping up during the shore run in Kentucky and on the Taylor-Southgate bridge coming back to OH. Last half mile I was feeling it, but you should be feeling it the last 1/2 mile! I was very happy with the time, the negative split and how I moved up through the field throughout the race. Went from 381 at 5k, to 380 at 10k, to 325 at 15k, to 261 at finish. Fun passing everyone the last third of the race. What would you do differently?: I guess I could have gone out faster, but really I wouldn't change a thing for a 1'st HM. Felt great the whole way, and finished strong with a smile. Can't ask for more than that. Beautiful morning - 65 and sunny! It was supposed to thunderstorm, but they never hit. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed a water, and found Jen and the folks. Chocolate milk and pb&j. No real warmdown. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being a newbie. I had no clue as to how to pace myself. That said, I'm very happy with the result and have no real complaints. Event comments: Great race with a big turnout. I'll be doing it again. Slept poorly. Just too nervous never having run longer than a 5k in over 30 years. Got up at 5:30 and had cereal, a banana, a bagel, and a fruit drink. Really felt full and worried that I overate. Shower and off to downtown Cincinnati for the race start at 7:45.
None. Hit the portapotty line instead. Talked to a couple guys in the start area. I had little clue what pace to line up for. My last hard run, a nine miler on Thursday, was pure hell. I tried to hold an 8 min pace, but lost it after 6 miles and ended up averaging 8:13. It was not pleasant and I didn't want a repeat of that, so I started just a little in front of the 9:00/mi pace group.
