Swim
Comments: Wierd swim start - we were divided into waves, but started in pairs of 2 every few seconds. This still caused a little anxiety for me - I definately still prefer plain ol' wave starts. Couldn't get a rhythm and knew I was going slow, but when I tried to speed up my breathing got out of control. I guess my lack of swimming is really catching up with me. What would you do differently?: More consistent with my swimming before the race. Transition 1
Comments: Transition time should have been faster, I wanted to get the grass and dirt off my feet, but it wasn't working well. Gave up and just put on the bike shoes, helmet, and grabbed the bike. My bike didn't seem to be rolling quite right when leaving transition, which ended up stopping me after I crossed the transition line. What would you do differently?: Fill my shoebox of water - I tried to skip that step this time and it slowed me down. I can wet and dry my feet better that way. Bike
Comments: This was a FANTASTIC bike leg for me - my best race pace yet - yeah! The time posted onthe relultsl website was off by about 1 mph, so I guess they didn't update their records to reflect the longer bike course. I can't believe I rode this fast! :) I lost some time at the beginning (just after crossing the transition line) as it looks like I didn't align my tires correctly last time and I had to open up my quick release brakes a little, so that the brakes weren't hitting the wheel. This was a stupid mistake, I should have checked this before the race. Then starting in the no-pass area, we were going SLOWLY as several people on mountain bikes struggled up the hill. The rest of the bike leg went well - my effort level felt comfortably hard, so maybe I could have pushed a little harder - some of the hills seemed tough, though! I was actually in aero for almost all the downhills - which is a big step for me! :) Oh yea, and my bike computer stopped working toward the end of the race, again. I think the sensor on the back wheel keeps getting loose and twisting away from the reader - I need to figure out if something can be tightened or something. What would you do differently?: Check my wheel alignment before the race. Transition 2
Comments: Had a little trouble getting my socks on, so I lost some time there. Other than that, okay transition. I would like this under a minute, but not too bad. What would you do differently?: Take more time to get my socks on, if necessary, because it caused me issues on the run. Run
Comments: It was humid out, so my breathing reflected that. Legs didn't feel quite as good as I would have liked, but not too bad. About .75 into the run, my left achilles started hurting, I stopped to check it out and realized I was getting a blister, because my (anti-blister) sock was twisted. I readjusted and started running again. It really started hurting, so I readjusted again - considered just walking - then started running again. After about .25-.5 miles, it pretty much stopped bothering me (or I was able to block it out). There was a nice long downhill between mile 2 and 3, the rest of the course was pretty rolling. Slower overall pace than I would have liked, but not bad based on the humidity and blister. When I finished I was not feeling good, so I think I pushed it as much as I could! :) Post race
Warm down: Walked around, got some water and a blue-raspberry snowcone, watched everyone finish, the usual... Event comments: The water was disgusting - my jersey is stained from the water (gross!!). Other than that, a good race. I can't believe I was 12th in my age group on the bike - that's crazy! Okay - for other people that probably not a big deal - but that's definately good for me! :) Good race, I think I'm making progress - yeah! On a side note - this was Kirk's first race and he liked it. We've been talking about the race a lot since yesterday and he's ready to do another one! Yeah!!! :) Last updated: 2006-05-10 12:00 AM

Woke up, ate 2 nutrigrain bars and some peanut butter. Got to the race around 6:30 and set up transition. Walked around and talked to people we knew doing the race and got in the water for a very short warmup.
Not much, a short, short swim in the dirty lake.
