Run
Comments: Managed to contract a "razor blade" sore throat on Friday and a subsequent chest infection on Saturday! Given I was carrying a significant L) gastroc. strain into the event this was the last thing I needed! Not another year down the drain..... What else to do but start... Chucked out the original race plan and every other one down to Plan F and stuck with that... for a while! First 5km at 4:30 min/km pace; 10km mark in 47 min. HR rising beyond expectation to 176 and just stuck there. Knowing I couldn't sustain that for the full 42 km I slowed but the HR wouldn't drop. Slowed more - HR dropped to 174! Felt strong until 20km even at 175 HR but at 22Km body collapsed under strain of virus and lack of sleep over past 72 hours. Ugly push through to 28km mark when the body finally said 'no more'. Next year is going to be my <3hr year! Scheming already to get to 2013 start line fit, healthy and ready to deliver what I am capable of! (1 gel every 30 mins) What would you do differently?: Not injure calf! Not get sick! Post race
Warm down: Roadside collapse at 28km, followed by beer. :-) What limited your ability to perform faster: Gastroc. strain over the past 3 weeks but most definitely getting and raging sore throat and lung infection 48hrs before the race. Event comments: Great Race. 28,000 competitors over the weekend - 5,700 in marathon and >10, 000 in the half Mary. Last updated: 2012-02-20 12:00 AM
