Pre-race routine:

Let's begin by saying it was supposed to be an easy taper week. Kids were at day camp, Steve was on travel... did not go that way. A was sick and had to stay home, kids were whiny, we were all tired, and Steve was STRESSED when we picked him up from the airport. Not to mention I stepped on a bee and my arch was stung. OUCH! This was not looking good...
Event warmup:

Up, ate, potty, talked with friends we haven't seen in a while... you know, the usual.
Swim
  • 21m 44s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 27s / 100 meters
Comments:

A sprint was going on as well, so Ultra fit bought new BRIGHT bouys which made sighting a whole lot easier than their deflated yellow thingies. Thanks for that! Was getting clawed and run into often until the turn around. But, I actually tried drafting this race.
What would you do differently?:

Sighting was going well and I thought I was spot-on until the final bouy, I kept aiming for it but felt like I had to make a big right turn to get there. I think I was mentally trying to stay where it was deep enough to swim instead of getting stuck in the shallows.
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Bike was ALL the way at the bike out. Then had to run a full minute or more to get to mounting line.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to pee in the water before getting out!!!!!!

Comments:

It was great knowing this course so well. I knew where to go fast and where to save my legs. I wanted to push it on the swim and bike to see what I can get out of my body. A personal goal for this race was to break 20 mph average. Thanks to the long running portion at the mount/dismount, I did not meet that goal! Crud! I still have 3 more races to meet this goal. I also took cornering way more aggressively since I was familiar with what was around the bend.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder? My run suffered a little, but could I have gone faster?
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

I chickened-out with the swing-the-leg-over-and-get-unclip dismount. Oh well. I need more practice, I suppose. Also, my lovely neighbor's bike was dumped over my gear so my shoes were nicely soaked from his leaking water bottle. Thanks, dude. (although, maybe it wasn't him? It was a nice bike and he had the ever-impressive golf-ball aero helmet.)
What would you do differently?:

Don't be a pansy.
Run
  • 47m 53s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Not sure how to answer the "drinking amt" question. I wasn't dying of thirst, I was feeling full, but my mouth was dry. Anyway, for the dam, it was a much better run than Tuesday. Both ways felt downhill. :) I was feeling pretty good until I reached the pavement, then I was just getting tired from pushing the swim and bike. I was not looking forward to the run in the woods. The path is narrow, no breeze or shade to cool you, and it just seems like an afterthought put there to frustrate and tease you. Not my best run, but I'll definitely take it. I've been spoiled this year with my running improvement. I want every run to be superfast. Oh, and thank you Lord for the girl in the purple shirt-- for her passing me early and giving me someone to follow. I needed her to pull me.
What would you do differently?:

Not run so fast the day before. I pushed it too hard on Saturday. My legs were screaming to go, and I indulged them. I knew better, too.
Post race
Warm down:

Salt. Needed salt. Spit out the banana I thought I wanted and grabbed pretzels. Stretched and talked with Brandon, Morgan, Jennifer, and Sophie.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Possibly overdoing it on Saturday. It was such a rough week and I wanted to relieve some stress. Also, force myself to relax even when life is incredibly stressful.

Event comments:

The important elements of this race are spot-on. However, there is no spark, no party, no sense of community. It's a race. Very low key, very subdued. Post race food needs help. Bananas, pretzels, raisin bread?, candy, gatorade and water. How about some variety? Oranges, please... and potato chips. (My two favorite after-a-hard-race treats.)

HR was nice and low until half-way then it grew steadily.
Course: Ugh. The dam down-and-back, past the finish line to the woods (down and back) to the finish. I have a love/hate relationship with this run course. No shade, uneven footing, no shade... did I already say that?
