Pre-race routine:

I don't usually file a report for a DNF. But hey, why not. If it wasn't for bad luck this season, I'd have no luck at all.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike the one mile from Sea Esta III to the race site.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 880 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

I will get this course in 2013.
What would you do differently?:

Not anger Poseidon.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition was spent deciding that yes, I am going on. There were maybe 50 of us still in the water. It reminded me how many others made it out just fine, in the same conditions. Yeah it was rough, but the vast majority finished the swim course. I really want to be a good swimmer, but it is clear I have not taken the time or effort to actually work at it. Just showing up to the pool for an hour at a time is meaningless if I am not improving.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 7.2 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Ride with a tube, pump and levers.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

As I walked into transition, I had a more optimistic thought, imspired by a pessimistic one. I realized my family might be out at the run looking for me. The motel is along the run course. M kids need to see my succeed. They wouldn't see the website results with a DNF, they just want to see Daddy in the race. I turned in my timing chip and racked my bike. Then I went running.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.5 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

I hit the run course, now an official DNF. But no one needed to know that. I wasn't taking a finisher's medal. (this race doesn't have them.) I paid for the course, right? I still had a bib number. If a person does the bike and dnf's the run, it's still 2 out of 3, so why not a dnf sandwich? I took the run, passing by our hotel, where the family wasn't expecting to see me so soon, and was still on the balcony. When I got back to them on the return, they were right on the course, with the dog and everything. I was happy to see them. I was out n the course, with the tribe, participating, i wasn't going to cross the finish line, but then here were all sorts of people cheering there, including some folks I had met the day before at the beach. I stopped to tell them I'm unoffical, not crossing. They told me to go on. Sme fat boys handed me a beer, I stopped and pounded it. That was fun. I shuffled across the line, and explained my lack f chip to the confused volunteers. It's all good.
Post race
Warm down:

I stood in line for the beer wagon. Got some food, and enjoyed the post-race combination of an uncrustable and a beer. Talked with some lifeguards about the currents. I met the race director for the rehoboth beach marathon and half. I was happy to be where I was, salvaging what I could from a really messy race day for me.

Event comments:

I will retun in 2013 to conquer that swim. The bike and run are short and flat, this race is all about the ocean swim. I am still getting over the reality that the swim is what destroyed me. S many of my friends think I must be this great swimmer because of the events I try, that they wouldn't, but in the context of endurance sports I have so so so so far to go to begin even to be a back-of-pack participant. That's ok, if it was easy it wouldn't be worth it. When I do he Manhattan swim some ay, I'll remember the time I couldn't swim against the current.

Course: The course went south to north, like 2011. This is a sprint distance, so I wasn't concerned about a DNF. Never assume. I'm still not a great swimmer, regardless of finshing a 5k. This ocean swim is nothing to play with. The 2011 waves were significant. This year looked much calmer. What was not obvious to the casual observer was the changing current. I was assured the wind was making it look different, but the current itself was still south to north. That was true at the race start, which was delayed. (I'm told this race has bnever started on time.) it was no longer true once I was in the water. I don't want to belabor the point. I was a mess. I did this swim in 29 minutes in 2011. I thought maybe with a calmer sea and some experience, I could do it in 25 this year. When I was still in the water at 45 minutes, I knew something wasn't right. I couldn't move forward. I saw a few people go in on lifeguard boards. I was slightly nauseous, but not getting sick. I felt weak, and just bobbed and stared a lot, not believing how badly I was doing. After 1:03, the lifeguard caught u pwith me from the back end of he swimmers who were left, and told me the swim was called off. Go to shore directly, the current has changed. We could still finish the race. At that point I wasn't sure I wanted to. I just wanted to make sure my family saw me get out of the water on my own two feet. <p>I got out and walked in to the finish. I was about 1/3 of the course from the finish. The walk up the beach was enough to lose the nausea, and feel like I could continue. I saw my daughter first, who was very happy I was alright. This is the spot and race where they saw a man pulled from the ocean last year.

Course: Heading out onto the course, I was glad to just be abe to move on and finish. But within the first mile, I was flat. Like a genius, I did not have a pump with me. It would not have mattered, later examination showed a pinch tear. I didn't see any course support, and I had no spare tube. I walked the bike back to transition. I gave up. I know someone would have patched me up. But it was now so late in the race, I would be dead last going out on the bike, which would make my dead last run even slower than usual. I still have residual "I don't belong here" issues, which were compounded by the idea of extending the course cutoff all by myself. There was no cutoff posted. It's a sprint, you shouldn't need one. Still, I just figured the day was over.
