Comments:

This was the best race I've had at this event so far. The first two years I did this one, I didn't have a good race. The first year was my first 10K so I wasn't experienced. Last year it was hot, and there was red tide. This year I felt great! My first mile was 6:58...a bit too fast for this distance. But I kept the rest of the race at about 7:40 or so. Ashley (Betsy's friend, who did her first race tonight) blew by me at about mile three and wound up coming in 60th. Won her age group too! Last two miles wound up being about 8 flat. Still was able to keep the average under 8 minutes. Right about mile 4 I realized that I still had energy though, it was great not feeling like I had to push myself to finish. I was really happy about that. I used no music. I've been getting used to racing without it because of USAT rules, so I've stopped using it in the running races too. I concentrate more on my breathing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a little bit. Noticed that I wasn't feeling as tired as I should. I think I could have gone a little faster. I waited for Jessica, Betsy and Adam to come in. Before Adam finished, they started doing awards so I went and got that. By the time that was all done, Adam had finished and we all went to see him at the finish line. Then it was time for Ashley to get her award, we went to do that, took some pics and then we all parted and went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My mind. I thought I was more tired than I was. I probably could have come in a good 30 seconds faster, but was afraid I'd use it up and die in the last mile. I know I can run a better 10K than that. NEXT TIME!!

Event comments:

A good race, fun and always organized, but they never give out a race packet. Hmmmph. Hardware was nice though. A wooden plaque with a nice brass overlay. I'm happy I still have some hardware ability in me this year, I've been feeling like I'm past my peak lately. This was a good confidence booster!
