Pre-race routine:

Woke up right at 4 a.m.
Had two cups of coffee and a honey stinger right around 4:45.
Got dressed, double checked my bag and threw in a few last minute things.
I was out of the door somewhere between 5:20-5:30.
I had a bottle of Gu Brew on the way down there and had an extra waffle with me, but I didn't end up eating it.
Event warmup:

No real warmup, just got my chip, hit the bathrooms and had a Gu 15 minutes before start time.
Run

Comments:

The run was hard to pace because of the narrowness of the trails. You were either going fast or going slow, it was pretty hard to find the right groove.

I had an enjoyable run and was very thankful for the cloudiness of the day. The sun did start to come out at the end and that slowed me down a bit, but it could have been a whole lot worse, that's for sure.

I started running with a water bottle in my hand to help wash down the pre-race Gu and so I cruised through the first water stop. The water bottle wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be and it was really helpful to have it especially since the first water stop was pretty congested. I tossed it soon after that.

Given this was my first warm weather race of the year, I made a point to stop at each water stop after that. I also walked each stop to make sure I was actually drinking. I stuck with water the first loop and switched to Gatorade the second loop around. The second loop, I started tossing some water down my back as well.

I took a Gu at 45 minutes and then again about 100 minutes in. I think my nutrition was spot on this race.

The last three miles were slower as I came to a complete stop at each water stop to fully drink and it was harder each time to get going again. By the end, I was just wanting to be done!
What would you do differently?:

Not much really. I could say I would have started up closer to the front of the race, but being towards the middle/pack kept me from going out to fast, always something I struggle with.

I can see, too, how if you are trying for a PR, having your own fluids would make a big difference. I probably spent two or three minutes total at the water stations.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed an ice cream bar, some Fritos and a soda. Food of champions :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and the narrowness of the trail

Event comments:

Not sure if I want to do this race again, but I'm really glad I did it at least once.
