Swim
Comments: I haven't been swimming as often as before my race in April, and could tell. I was a bit slower today, and more tired. I kept up with the front pack until those who did fast flip turns got away from me. What would you do differently?: I need to master the flip turn-lost time from not doing this Transition 1
Comments: Due to the torrential downpour complete with lighting and hail that happened while i was in the pool, T1 was soaked. My bike jersey had blown off my bike and was covered in dirt and grit from the parking lot. However, this transition was otherwise smooth and fast for me. Had a little trouble clipping in, and was freaked out by the lighting that struck ahead! Bike
Comments: Lots of rollers, had a hard time on the way out keeping a fast pace. The wind and rain were a real be-otch! Dropped one of my gels, ate the other and managed to drink most of my 16 oz bottle of accelerade. The way back was fun-spinning at 35 mph (i love that), but it wasn't quite enough to make up for the snail pace in the beginning while climbing so I didn't make my goal of averaging 18 mph. Rode in the drops every time I could accelerate, passed one person, and then another who had a flat-he promptly passed ME once he fixed his tire! What would you do differently?: pack extra gels into my tri top Transition 2
Comments: My stuff was still wet at T2, and since I was doing this race without socks I had a hard time putting on wet running shoes. The insole kept bunching up, slowing me down. I had my helmet off right away and grabbed my hat and off I went. Grabbed a water from the station and then tried to run! Run
Comments: So I realize the run course was supposed to be challenging, but I just could not settle in and run it! I'm pretty disappointed in my time-I can run 9-10 min miles in training no problem-but this is usually without consistent hill running. I was stiff from climbing the hills on the bike leg, and while I could deal with the hurt, I didn't have much gas in the tank for another hill workout. The lady I passed on the bike passed me on the run :( Had to walk up the last three hills, was pissed at myself for this. Once I neared the finish line, I picked it up and ran through into the arms of my hubby. Very happy to have completed the course! What would you do differently?: Do more hills in training, research the race route more!! Post race
Warm down: I could barely stand at first! Water, bananna, sit down on grass and stretch. Tell my husband all about it. I was surprised to see that I placed 2nd in my age group!! Yea ME!! Ok, there were only 5 of us, but I gotta take my kudos when I can, right? No hardware, a waterbottle was my prize. I will cherish it fo-evah! Event comments: A challenging race, but was scheduled weird-too spread out and the day just went on forever. The mini-sprint didn't start until 9 am, and the elite heat of the sanctioned sprint was finishing at 5 pm. There were less than 300 competitors total, so it should not have taken this long! I placed 2nd in my age group, and it was 7:30 pm before they got around to awards! Was really happy to have placed, had a cold beer and then fell asleep in the truck on the way home...happy girl. Overall I know I could have done better. I totally thought I could do this race in under 2 hours, and was a bit bummed not to meet this goal. My "fast" goal was 1:50:00, but all the slow climbing of hills on both the bike and the run killed this possibility. Will be riding lots of hills this summer for sure. Well I found out the day before that switching to the longer-course sprint created some problems. The race director put me in the last heat of the day-3pm! My swim time was 5-7 min slower that all others in the heat, and it was all men. I was bummed to have to wait all day in the heat and then probably do the whole race alone since everyone else would be ahead of me. Doesn't do much for the ego! I mean I know triathlon is an individual sport, but it would be painful to have my mediocrity rubbed in my face so much! I spoke to the RD who told me she would put in me in an earlier heat if a spot opened up. We camped at Canyon Ferry Lake the night before, so spent the morning driving up to Great Falls, and then trying to relax and lay low until the afternoon. Weird way to organize a tri in my opinion.
NONE!! Thank goodness I set up my transition area way early and got everything ready-because all of a sudden the RD said "get in the pool!" A spot opened up about 2 pm and I literally had to grab goggles, jump in and start swimming. No warm up, stretching or last-minute nutrition. So much for staying relaxed...
