Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45 ,did not get much sleep becuase my son graduated high school the night before. Ate a bowl of cereal, OJ and then a bananna on the way.

Got everything set up in transition pretty smooth.
Event warmup:

Swam out to the first buoy and back.
Swim
  • 10m 38s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a decent time but i made two major navigation erros, twice I was way out to the right, totally off course. I kept my head down way too long on a couple of segments. This cost me quite a bit of time.
What would you do differently?:

Take many more opportunities to sight, bi-lateral breath to balance my course. I also lost time when I thought I was at the end and I tried to stand up twice and was not close to touching, so had to restart swimming.
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Good transition for first triathalon, would not change anything
Bike
  • 49m 15s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.62 mile/hr
Comments:

I was really thirsty when I came out of the swim, so I was lacking in good energy at the begining. This course has one long 4 mile climb and then closes with a 1.5 mile steep climb. I got smoked on the hills. Passed many people on the flat and down hill but got passed by more on the uphills. This is my weak area and a very tough course for first tri.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight and ride more long hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Good transition
Run
  • 32m 2s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

The hills on the bike took a lot out of me. My legs felt good, but I was having a hard time with energy level and was really slowed by the hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of sleep the night before. I needed to fuel better pre-race and durign the race. I opted to not use the gel and I should have.

Event comments:

Event was very organized and I thought they had people at all the right spots on the course to provide direction on the sharp downhill s curve.
