Fast Forward Race
68F / 20C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 10m
Overall Rank = 68/411
Age Group = 40-45
Age Group Rank = 9/45
Pre-race routine:

Ate banana, cliff bar, and drank Gatorade. Got to race start early.
Event warmup:

Ran two miles warm up. Stretched and swam.
Swim
  • 14m 7s
  • 440 yards
  • 03m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Tough swim. Didn't do FS the whole way. Did a medley of strokes including backstroke. Not completely happy with this swim and I'll be thinking about open water swims all winter.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get tougher on the open water swims. It is discouraging to know that I can swim much faster but to find myself loosing confidence in the open water on race day.
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Not a bad transition. Put socks on this time where I haven't been doing this before. Lost a few seconds at first but it made my run a lot more comfortable.
Bike
  • 31m 25s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.10 mile/hr
Comments:

First race/ride on my new 2012 Specialized Tarmac. Good ride.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up my cadence.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Struggled a little bit with my race belt and getting my sneakers on. Lace broke on my race flats.
What would you do differently?:

Prepare my number belt for getting put on, run with it out of transition.
Run
  • 21m 27s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt like I was moving faster than I was. I really tried to pick it up for the last mile (I knew it was the last mile because on the way out there was a water station there and the girl said that it was the mile mark). I was able to pick up for awhile but died out. Kicked in the end but wasn't challenged
What would you do differently?:

Work before the race on picking up the intensity at the end of all of my runs.
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was sick. Had a bad head cold and sore throad for two days before the race and ran with the cold.

Event comments:

I'd do this one again. I was psyched and at the same time apprehensive about the surf. But I wish that I had taken that challenge on more directly.
