Age Group Rank = 27/40
Pre-race routine:

Up attem, breakfast, coffee, hit the road.
Event warmup:

Walk to the International distance start. Quick warm up in the water.
Swim
  • 40m 30s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim waves started right on time. Mine was the last wave (purple caps). I was the only purple cap without a wetsuit. Since it's my first race of the season I didn't go bounding in with the lead pack. I can sometimes get anxiety and I didn't want to go out to fast. So I held back but then ended up weaving in and around a bunch of folks on the way to the first buoy.
What would you do differently?:

Be more assertive at the start. Wear a wetsuit even though the water was plenty warm.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

It's a big race so transition is big. I was happy with my time. I didn't wear a wetsuit so no time was lost there.
What would you do differently?:

learn how to jump onto the bike - maybe.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 20s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.33 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to concentrate on staying focused and keeping my effort up on the ride. I have a tendancy to not pay attention and slow down. I did a good job with this and this was a good ride for me.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to get faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I had frozen a bottle of water and left it in transition for my post bike shower. It was cold and awesome. Maybe the best idea I had all day.
What would you do differently?:

choose gu not chomps for the run fuel. Carry a fuel belt.
Run
  • 57m 23s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal was to start out at goal pace and maintain 9:30 or faster for the course. I did this. It was a great run.
What would you do differently?:

I had trouble getting my nutrition out of my snazzy new trisuit because the pockets are inconvenient. I would choose gu instead of the chomps and I would carry my own water to avoid the wait at the water tables.
Post race
Warm down:

Standing around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I should have worn my wetsuit since everyone else wore theirs. But other than that the only thing is just improving my abilities.

Event comments:

This is a great race. It's pretty big (3000) participants so it's a good idea to plan ahead for parking and other things that take a little extra time. But it's a great venue and a I though a great event.
