Pre-race routine:

My training has not been where it should have been for this race. My highest mileage was 7ish miles between my 13.1 in late March and race day. My priority has been to get the house ready to sell and it has been pretty time-consuming. I was going into this race with a time to beat and to have fun! I accomplished both of those goals! I actually had a blast! I never once wondered why I was doing this. I never once wanted to quit. I was actually thinking about when my next one would be.

Met up with Jungle Jenn at the expo and wandered around with her. She is hilarious and SUPER positive. Just what I needed. Got my self a 13.1 magnet for my van (I'd been looking for one and hadn't found one that seemed like me) and a saying about 13.1. Got myself some new shirts (clearance) and a race belt (good investment for race day). Headed out from the expo to meet up with a friend of hers at a local Italian restaurant. We were there for almost 3 hours just talking and eating. Great choice! Left them to their own devices and headed just outside of downtown to see my sister and her boys! They had a scout campout this weekend which is why I didn't stay with them. The boys are getting so big! My sister fed me French Vanilla ice cream (one of my all-time favorites) that she remembered from growing up with me. I talked with the boys about my race and their campout. Left and went back to the hotel. Jungle Jenn left a wake up call for 5:07 and they did!!!! That was hilarious!
Event warmup:

Jungle Jenn and I parked in a garage (got the level and name of it but forgot to remember its location) and walked to little bit to the race then to our assigned corrals. I walked 32.20 to the start line from the time of the start.

Comments:

Knowing that my training was not as good as it should have been, I went into this race expecting to have fun and knowing that "it is what it is." As we were walking toward the start line, it was cool (for me) to walk by places that I haven't been back to in more than 25 years. We walked by the Indiana Repertory Theater and the Indiana Roof Ballroom, both places that I haven't been to since Senior prom in 1984. I then walked by the Hyatt regency and remembered our dress up dates with friends or Grandma & Grandpa at the top in the Eagle's Nest restaurant. It is a rotating restaurant and we always thought it was cool. I had to stop at mile 2 for a potty break (for as much crap as I give Mike for being a creature of habit, I am too, hence the stop) and it seemed to take forever. I walked EVERY water/Gatorade station (that was the plan from the get go). I wanted to be able to run the whole thing. I almost accomplished that. I passed several different styles of bands and I told them thanks you, just as I did for the volunteers. Went by the plant where my dad used to work (took a picture) and reminisced about those days. Went by a building that had 4 of the Sesame Street characters on it. Took a picture and remembered how our oldest son, Evan, used to call Big Bird Dig Dird because he couldn't say the letter B. Felt pretty good and at mile 6 we hit the entrance to the Speedway. I grew up being in the 500 parade and having tickets to the infield and haven't been back since then. As I ran in all I could do was deal with flashback memories of being here with my grandpa. There were cheerleaders there from different high schools having cheer camp. One group was dressed for Cinco de Mayo. Another was dressed for Christmas (took a picture of Gingerbread Man). At mile 8 we left the speedway and headed back to town. Nothing really notable about this part of the run for me. I had a strawberry banana gu at about mile 9.5 (water station). That helped a bit, but it was getting really warm and the flag system had changed from green to yellow. Saw lots of people receiving medical treatment and decided that I would not be one of them. I had a "pie in the sky" goal and a realistic goal. The realistic goal took over. My counselor would would have told me I chose realistic over reasonable, which would be a good thing. I hit mile 11 and had only walked the water/Gatorade stations and just was not feeling it. I walked for about 3/4 miles between 11.5 and 12.5. I ran the rest in and felt strong. Got through the finish line and the gauntlet of "here, here, here, do you want, would you like" and realized that I wanted water, chocolate milk and a nap. Met back up with Jennifer and then we had to find my van again. That included another 1/2 mile of walking.
What would you do differently?:

Absolutely nothing! I had a great time at this race both physically and mentally!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around to find Jungle Jenn at the chocolate milk booth ( Igrabbed 2) and we tried to find the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough consistent training and that is easily fixed!

Event comments:

The water stations were set up every half mile for the last 4 miles because of the heat. This was a very good thing and I was impressed.
