Swim
Comments: Start was wierd and I didn't get my rhythm for a bit. Then it was pretty much a free for all as people came into the choke points at the buoys. It was a fun swim even if it wasn't my best performance. What would you do differently?: Get faster 8) Transition 1
Comments: I was a bit out of sorts after the swim and took a little more time then I would have liked on the run from the water to T1. That said, after the run to T1 the transition went pretty darn well. What would you do differently?: Get more base so I can run faster from the swim to T1 Bike
Comments: I really thought I was faster here then I was. Not sure what the deal was with that. In any case the ride went pretty well. No technical issues with the bike, although after my fit session on Friday for the new bike I knew just how much this current bike doesn't fit me. That said I got my legs warm and ready about 5 miles in and was able to start getting into a good rhythm. The first 5 miles were kinda blah but after that I started to feel powerful. If I had had my watch on me (forgot it before the race) I probably would have pushed this harder. Going off my bike computer I thought my pace was better then it was. Overall the bike was enjoyable. There were some very crowded sections where passing was a bit of an issue but the course was laid out well and managed well. What would you do differently?: Go out harder. I should have warmed up for a mile then started to hammer a bit. It would have probably woken my legs up faster. I should have been able to shave 4 minutes off this time. Transition 2
Comments: Came into T1 in good position. Got my feet under me just fine and got to my rack quickly. Racking went well and just flipped over to run hat and shoes. I took a few extra seconds to down some water and grab the watch I forgot in the beginning. These may or may not have been wasted seconds. Knowing how I was doing on the run allowed me to make my goal time. Without the watch I'm not sure I would have. What would you do differently?: Not forget my watch in the first place. Run
Comments: I'm slow and I know it. I have only 3.5 months of run base under my belt and it shows. This time out I focused on pacing myself out of T2 which worked well. I was easy in mile one, picked up in mile 2, and got my speed (for me) in mile 3. I was able to run out the last few hundred meters of the race. I should have probably started to sprint a bit earlier but I'm still figuring out my limits. What would you do differently?: I need more run base badly. This off-season is going to be all about building base. My legs never got tired or heavy. I just can't stay aerobic long enough yet to bring my mile times down. I can sprint pretty fast but that doesn't help me much over more then 1 mile. Post race
Warm down: Warm down? Grabbed some water and a bannana. Walked around and chatted a bit. Would have been nice to know more people going to the event but maybe that will come with time. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run base and a properly fitted bike. I need more time in the saddle but it doesn't serve me very well on the bike I have now. I should have the bike remedied in the next few weeks and then it will be time to build saddle time. Run base is critical. If I keep swimming I know I'll get faster but in a wetsuit I'm solidly MOP. The run is my glaring weakness. Dropping some more weight (saying goodbye to clydesdale this winter) and building base will get me solidly into the MOP of the running section. I'm pretty happy though. My time I was trying to hit was 1.30.00 and I was within seconds of that. Event comments: The swim venue is a little goofy but the bike and run courses are very nice. There were plenty of volunteers and they had a good selection of drinks and such after the event. I really like how the transition areas were set up. It took all the guesswork and jockeying for best spot out of it. Last updated: 2006-05-12 12:00 AM

Up at 3:45 am so I could get to the venue at a decent time. Small breakfast and a few bottles of water.
Drive was pretty boring at that time of morning but glad I got there when I did. Check-in was a bit crazy later in the morning but I was able to sail through and get into transition early.
Pretty interesting, this race had assigned racks for transition which was pretty cool. They were well spaced and everyone seemed to have enough room. At least on the racks around me.
Had 2 endurolytes and 2 advil about an hour before race start.
Not much of anything. It was chilly that morning and I was walking around talking to people. I walked for a while but otherwise just waited for the start.
