Pre-race routine:

Got up real early, 3 A.M. and ate a waffle with peanut butter, apple sauce, and some coffee. Packed the car up and my wife, and headed over to her friends house to pick her up. They were doing the relay. My wife did the swim and run and her friend did the bike.
Event warmup:

Short run with dynamic stretching with Matt, Adam and Ryan. Quick swim out the the first dock and back.
Swim
  • 28m 34s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started near the front this year and I think it helped. There was very little kicking and punching going on. Siting the first bouy was hard because it was right into the sun, so I aimed for the sun. Took the bouys wide to avoid congestion and it was perfect, no slowing or stopping. Headed back hard and finished with a PR and beat last years time on the swim by almost 2 full minutes. Very happy about this.
What would you do differently?:

Arms got chaffed so I need to put body glide on those areas I missed.

Fastest T1 in my agegroup, so I am happy.

Comments:

So I got Zipp 404's this week to race on. They were awesome!
So I got out of the swim and headed out on the bike. Took it eeasy for the first 3 miles to settle the HR. Then started pushing hard to the bottom of olde stage. Got there and sarted to spin at a fast pace. Got up olde stage and had 2 guys pass me. I caaught them both by the bottom of the hill. Pushed hard down left hand canyon and got up 36 quickly and hammered Nelson and felt good. Pushed hard on the rollers and played cat and mouse with another guy on the bike. Finally dropped him by the end. Another guy passed me and I thought, get your ass going so I got him and dropped him and pushed hard to the transition. Didn't go so Hard that I had nothing left, I was still feeling good. I beat last years bike time by 2 minutes exactly! Very happy with my decsisions I made here on the bike.

Transition 2

Comments:

So I see Steve Pye racking his bike. He is a fierce competitor of mine and I wanted to beat him. I beat him at 5430 sprint, and he beat me at Nationals. So I yell, I have a chance! He smiles.
Fastest T2 in my agegroup.

  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

So I hustle through T2 and look for my rabbit Steve. I see him ahead about 75 yards. I slowly come up on him and pass him at mile 2. Get to the turn around and he comes up on me and says let's catch Cory. Another agegrouper we know. So I work with him and we take turns pacing. He had stronger legs than I did today. I was struggling to hang on in the end. We catch Cory at mile 5 and 1/2. Steve then turns to me and says, I don't want to challenge you today, do you want to finish together. Me being exausted say ok! He would have beat me any way. So we finish together and they put him ahead of me any way in the final standings. That's ok. Beat last years time by 1:10.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around with a cold wet towel on my head and talked to everyone. Ate some post race pasta and had a few beers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing

Event comments:

This was an awesome race. Everyone had awesome races as well. Sorry to hear about my friend Shannon and her crash on the bike course. I hope she feels better after the beers over here at the house.
My original goal was to be under 2:23. I then wrote down that 2:21 was possible. I really can't believe I was 2:19:32. I didn't check my watch until an hour after the race. Very happy.
