Pre-race routine:

This was my 3rd year doing this race. I really like it, especially because it is so close to home. Only a 15 min drive. Woke up at 6am. Took shower, made coffee and ate breakfast. This is also day 3 of my 2 week gluten free experiment so b-fast was honey nut chex, yogurt and coffee. left house around 7am.

Arrived at race and picked up race packet, body markings and set up transition. Ate home made gluten free bar. At 8:30, put on wetsuit and head to lake for a warmup.

Ended up coming in 1st in my AG (really 2nd, but the person in first finished in the overall top 3 so everyone in the AG bumped up 1 slot. Yippee! now I am 2 for 2 this year. This is the one race I haven't place in. Its harder to place since AG's are 10 years (40-49). Very happy with overall progression from 2010 to this race as well.

2010: 1:24:16
2011: 1:15:55 (13th overall, 6/53 in AG)
2012: 1:13:40 (10th overall, 1st in AG)
Event warmup:

3 back and fourths to first buoy. It really didn't do much since I had to wait so long for my wave, but helped cool me down a little.
Swim

Comments:

I was in wave 9 so had to wait a bit. Started on left side near buoys hoping to get a better line. Line up next to Phil and followed him for first 200 yards. Felt pretty good, but noticed I was starting to drift right. Around 1st buoy nicely. Started to pass people from earlier waves. Lots of floaters and a few with noodles. Nice line to 2nd buoy. Started to drift too far right again after last buoy. I also had a hard time seeing the correct line back to the beach. I couldn't see the exit area very well. Over corrected and ended up too far left, but once I realized where I was, had a nice finish.

2010: 10:33 (My first tri)
2011: 8:24
2012: 8:06

What would you do differently?:

not much. Could have gone a little faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Had a little more trouble getting top off this time. Got stuck over my head while running up path to transition. Saw kids and waved. Top off and bib down to waist. Used wetsuit strippers.

I had shoes clipped to pedals and mount seemed to go well. Could always be faster getting on bike.

T1 includes run up hill to transition.
What would you do differently?:

practice getting wetsuit top off.
Bike
  • 40m 13s
  • 16 miles
  • 23.87 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt fairly good on the bike. It was hard passing people since a lot of people were too far left and wouldnt move over. Even harder on 2nd lap. Nobody past me on the bike. I probably could have gone a little harder on the bike.

2010: 45:24
2011: 41:55
2012: 40:13
What would you do differently?:

Keep power more level. I think I have a harder time keeping power up on the flats or slight downhills.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

No real issues with T2. I didnt really know how close I was getting so wasnt sure where best place to take feet out. I also slowed down too soon.
What would you do differently?:

Study where to take feet out.
Run
  • 21m 58s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile was hard. Stomach cramps and legs not 100%. I also went out too fast for first mile. I would have liked to have negative splits, but I was the exact opposite. Still showed improvement from last year, but not as much as I hoped. I really wanted to be below 21.

2010: 26:20
2011: 22:17
2012: 21:58
What would you do differently?:

Need more running mileage and frequency. Not really sticking to my plan of running 5-6 times a week. Only getting out 3-4.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water, walked around. Talked with a few friends. Saw family. Went to get something to eat. Since I am now on my gluten free diet, it really limited what I could have. Just had burger with no bun. Stomach really not wanting more than that yet either (it was also only 10:30am). But really wished there were better options.

Event comments:

Overall, this was a good race. So glad the weather was nice for this one.

There could have been more volunteers on the bike course though. There were none at a few intersection with lights and wasnt sure what the cars were going to do when their light turned green. I also saw a few people shoot by one of the intersections. Luckily, I remembered the course so I knew were the turn was. I heard this happened to several other people as well.
