Swim
Comments: FIRST in the age group! The only problem is that I took the run up a little fast and wanted to get sick when in T1. What would you do differently?: Honestly, it was probably one of my best swims and having someone on my right to keep me motivated to keep pushing myself while also aligned with the shore helped too. Transition 1
Comments: Strong feeling of nausea kept me from a smooth T1 which didn't make me happy. I got in there pretty quickly but lost precious time taking it slow so as not to actually get physically sick. What would you do differently?: Probably one of my worst T1's ever. I think my "training camp" next week is going to have to focus on transitions one or two days. Bike
Comments: While my bike slit improved over last year by over a minute and a half, it remains...my weakest link. I haven't looked at the power output yet or any other details, but my average was better than the sprint I did a few weeks ago (also considering the hills or rather, bridge ascents). What would you do differently?: I'm slightly frustrated with myself for having such a terrible FTP. The bike remains my Achilles heel and I don't know how/why. My legs are going to get a little rest this coming week but they are going to get a beat down the week after. Transition 2
Comments: Looking at the other T2's, I'm in the middle where best T2 looks to be about 1:16 while some others get up there beyond 2:00. What would you do differently?: T2 went better today than a couple weeks ago, except, once again, my shoe unclipped after I got off my bike! I was 15 yards up when I realized the "Shoe!" yelling was for me but thankfully someone picked it up and was able to hand off pretty quickly, though I lost a good 10 seconds of time here. Run
Comments: Actually a bit confused about the run timing here because I was showing a 6:55-7:00 pace the ENTIRE run portion of the race. Anyway, timing system says I ran a full minute slower than last year which is a little disappointing. I can't say that I'm 100% surprised, however (see below). What would you do differently?: After a trail run / lunge workout on Wednesday, I ran a 5k race on Thursday...a bit of stress on my legs and body, to say the least. I need a day to recover. I think its starting to wear on me. Additionally, I felt pretty good despite the significant heat...it was in the low 80's by the time the run started, except that my left hip started bothering me a bit during mile two and hasn't subsided since. I need to get this dealt with quickly. Post race
Warm down: Two bottles of ice water some to drink but mostly cool body down (it was close to 85 by the time the race finished). Cold towel and then bee line to the massage table. What limited your ability to perform faster: Too much work/activity this week (as noted above) is starting to wear out my body. I need some recovery! Event comments: I got #1 in the swim in my age group which is a great accomplishment on my side, but it seems that the race went down hill from there. Many points of perspective to consider/reconsider like my bike performance (in general), recovery from training and racing, and "need" to make the podium with each race. I need to dig a little deeper for the next level of "lessons learned" and apply them to the next seven and 13 weeks of training (because I WILL qualify for Boston 2013). Got to race site fairly early as South Beach traffic is always questionable, even at 5:30 AM. Started working on my protein shake and CLIF bar on the way down, and because I got there early enough I was able to get a decent spot on the racks. After getting set up I started on a coconut water as I chatted with a few friends I saw around.
After the pre-race meeting, instructions and National Anthem (while I did some preliminary stretching/foot exercises), we headed down the shore towards the swim start where I was able to get some running drills in, then I took a 200 yard swim to get everything okay with the wetsuit.
