Swim
Comments: The swim part of this race is making me crazy for the second year in a row. For at least 4 of the lengths, I was jammed up with about 4 other people blocking the entire lane. We would all hit the wall together. No one at this race enforces the numbering system. This cost me at least 30 seconds on my time. After fighting through the cluster, I got to open water and cruised the last 75 yards until I got to the ladder. Another jam at the ladder. Why give out numbers if there is no interest in enforcing the numbering policy? What would you do differently?: I don't know, jump in with the first 50 maybe. Transition 1
Comments: Decided not to start with shoes clipped in. I think this was a wise choice. I passed about 7 people in the first couple hundred yards struggling to get their feed in their shoes. If I did this all the time and really practiced, I'm sure it would be faster but I don't. My watch says my T1 was 58 seconds. The official time says 1:44. I don't understand where the large difference was. Sunglasses fogged when I put them on and almost dropped the bike. A little rough there but didn't waste too much time. What would you do differently?: Not much. Could have been a little cleaner through T1 but I can't complain. Bike
Comments: By far, the best bike split to date. Averaged over 20. Stayed in the aerobars most of the distance and attacked the hills. The second loop required a merge but no issue there at all. I had a medical issue that kept me off the bike for the first week in April and didn't know how this would work out. Under 40 minutes is very good for me. What would you do differently?: Continue to work and get faster. I don't think I could have done anything better. Transition 2
Comments: Very good transition. Racking on the end of the row makes transition SO much easier. Could not have done better in this area. My watch said :52 seconds so there is a discrepency here somewhere. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I was really working hard on the bike so it took about a mile or so to settle in to my run. The first uphill out of the neighborhood hurt a little but when the second loop started I was in a good groove. Wanted to stay under 8:30 pace and ended up about 8:23. What would you do differently?: Not much. The more I train the faster I will get. Better than my target for today. Post race
Warm down: Had a Powerade and some pancakes. Packed up and went home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Myself. I was hoping to break 1:15. I was 1:27 last year. According to my watch, I finished in 1:12:26 instead of the 1:13:44. I'm not sure where the extra 68 seconds went but it doesn't matter. I'm really happy with the improvement. A give or take 15 minute improvement over last year is big. I have someone helping with my training over the past few months and that makes a big difference. Event comments: I rate Organized as "No" purely for the Swim cluster. Ridiculous. I'm not sure when they are going to get it together in there. A good warmup race to start the season and set a baseline moving forward. Only a few miles from home so I'll probably keep doing this one each year unless the swim organization drives me away. Woke up around 4am. Had a Stinger Waffle and package of peanut butter crackers. Took off early to get a good rack spot. Was there when transition opened and got the first spot in my rack. Worth the early wake up.
Not much to speak of.
