Swim
Comments: The swim was harder than I expected, not due to distance but all of the "other" variables, which I had read about but not experienced. All the things I read which said "you won't understand until you do it" were true; the constricted lungs in cold water, the kicks in the face, grabbing-at-my-ankles stuff. Frankly, it was like a battle royale in the water. None of it intentional, mind you, but still pretty physical. It was just hard to get into my rhythm until about 200 m in, and then we got to the buoy, everyone got packed together making the turn, and it started again. Still, it was a great learning experience, and I did OK, just a couple minutes slower than my best pool times. Hopefully I'll be more prepared next time. What would you do differently?: RELAX and swim more confidently. Oh, and wear goggles that don't fog at 25m! Transition 1
Comments: Not bad for 1st tri, but I can make up a lot of ground here. Speed laces may help What would you do differently?: Um, everything FASTER. Bike
Comments: Road bike worked very well. I felt strongest during the climbs, but my times weren't as competitive as they were in the other 2 events. Of course, I spent the least time training on the bike, so now I know where to direct more energy in the future. What would you do differently?: I need to practice more on the bike. Also, I held myself back to "save up" for the run. In hindsight, I could have put more effort in. Transition 2
Comments: I have clips, so it was a no-brainer. What would you do differently?: NOt much. Pretty fast for me. Run
Comments: NOt as fast as my usual 5k, but I'm pretty happy with it. What would you do differently?: Run faster (duh!). I need to do more intervals. Post race
Warm down: Walked. Ate some bananas. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think I held back too much, in fear of the second bike-run set. Oh, and I was not as well prepard for all the "other" stuff of the OWS. I'll be better next time. Event comments: I'd give it a 5, but I only have a sample size of 1. Overall, I was happy with how I did. Again, I didn't do this to be competitive, but I ended up placing 5th in the Novice division. My times would have put me MOP with my age group (30-35), but to be fair, I may have benefitted from starting last in terms of the swim start not being as aggressive. The main thing for me was I finished the whole thing without stopping, walking, doggy-paddling, etc. Now, on to Mistletoe! Last updated: 2006-05-13 12:00 AM
