Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 4:30am - didn't sleep too well but probably as good as could be expected with being my first triathlon. Had a couple muffins, cup of coffee, and a Propel. I also took a couple Motin due to a sore knee. My sister-in-law and I got to the event around 5:30am. It was starting to sprinkle off and on.
Event warmup:

We got our bikes into the transition area at a good time - it wasn't to hectic yet. We placed our bikes on the rack but didn't really set up yet due to the rain. We were there early enough that we walked over to the pool area to check it out and decided to take a couple bathroom breaks while we could. The lines into the porta-potties were getting longer and longer.

We got to the transition area about 20 minutes before closing to get set up. Everything was pretty wet by now but not much we could do about it. Several people brought garbage bags or something similar to cover their bikes. This was a good idea and something I would try to do next time if there is any threat of rain.

I ate one last power bar and Propel about 45 minutes before my wave was due to begin(7:48am).
Swim
  • 23m 37s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 09s / 100 meters
Comments:

Ugh! I did terrible for this event but it was my own fault. I did not train well for this event at all. I will do things much differnt next time and be better prepared. My breathing was my problem that I could never get in a rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Train, train, and train. Unfortunately I under estimated my swim ability and didn't spend the needed time to train for this event.
Transition 1
  • 05m 47s
Comments:

Not as well as I would have liked but okay due to the fatigue caused as a result of the poor swim. I didn't hussle as I had planned to. I was more concerned with making sure I did everything I needed to during T1 that I didn't worry about speed. I needed this time to pull myself together to get ready for the bike event. My bike was racked on the far side of the transition area and also opposite from the bike in/out. Good spot though in terms as finding it in the sea of bikes - I was on an end.

I did have some water and jelly beans (energy-type) to gain some energy back.
What would you do differently?:

I think had the swim gone better, my T1 time would have been much improved. While in T1, I had no problems and did all that I needed to - but was still pretty spent from the swim.
Bike
  • 51m 47s
  • 14.29 miles
  • 16.56 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt good during this event and was able to regain my focus after doing badly on the swim. Even though it was raining, it kept me cool and things went pretty smooth. I just had to be a little cautions around corners/turns due to the wet conditions.
What would you do differently?:

Push myself harder to improve my time.
Transition 2
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

Went fine...took a little time to find my walking legs again. I think this is due to my inexperience and would be better next time.

Again, I had some water (not a lot) and more jelly beans to gain some energy for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Push myself harder to improve my T2 time.
Run
  • 33m 57s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm not a runner normally so I was pleased with my time in this event. My time was actually a little better than it was during training. I knew I wasn't going to be breaking any speed records but this was okay with me.
What would you do differently?:

Push myself harder next time to improve time.
Post race
Warm down:

banana and Cytomax

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My poor swim and lack of training for this event. This was my first triathlon so I think I learned a lot having gone thorugh it once now that it will help me better prepare for the next one.

Event comments:

The course for each event was very nice and it was extremely well run. Courses were well marked and lots of voluteers everywhere.

This was a great experience and one I will never forget. I can't wait to do the next one - but not before some better training and preparation for the swim event.

I have never had an athletic bone in my body so this felt like a huge accomplishment for me. Of course now I think I can tackle anything that comes my way :-)
