Pool etiquette is something that should probably be addressed. Getting your feet slapped does not mean speed up and wear yourself out. It means "Hey friend, I'm a little faster than you; at your earliest convenience, the end of this lane perhaps, allow me to pass you, to alleviate my crusade of your backside. Thanks."
What would you do differently?:

Enter my swim time more accurately @ registration and swim more like the guy from Kung-Fu. I will be the Zen-Buddhist of the pool.

Practice the ol' shoes already on the pedals trick and a moving mount technique.

The course was a little confusing. You end up running one length of the course four times, but no biggey. Plenty of water stations.

Wear something to catch the sweat.
