Run
Comments: Plan was to take it easy the first 3 miles, keep heart rate around 158 bpm and then slowly pick up the pace. Took my own fuel belt this year. Had 2 8 oz bottles of malto mix (300 calories) and 1 8 oz bottle of water. Refilled the water once on the course. Took aspirin at mile 6 and gel at mile 8. Started in wave 3, got pulled into the pace of the group (a little too fast) but loved the huge downhill in the beginning (remember you have to come back up this at the end!). Having my own fuel was great, I could sip a little throughout the whole race and go around the crowded water stops. It was sunny (had a visor but no sunglasses, worked fine). It was uphill from about mile 8 to 9.75 and the last little portion of the race was downhill. Paced myself at the end, so I would have a strong finish. It worked! Very happy with this race :) What would you do differently?: hmm...maybe try to go out a little slower so I can go even faster at the end (checked my time on my watch at the half way point, it was 50:36 - so knew I was already faster than last year's of 52:something). Post race
Warm down: skipped all the water handouts so I could keep walking. HR had spiked to 182 (wow!!!) - - eventually got some apple bits and peanuts - - -the ice cold towels were awesome (one on my head and one around my neck). Picked up race premium (LOVE the long sleeve race shirt - it's really nice). What limited your ability to perform faster: nada.......I felt pretty good on the hills - - all my training is paying off :) Event comments: This is a great race - very well organized. Had a 10 minute delay in start due to traffic - not a big deal. New start location is MUCH better and wave start is improving - probably need to allow more space for the different waves and pace groups so people can get to their proper places. Plenty of porta pots so lines were not bad. I didn't realize the new race start was so far away from the old start and walked a good 1.5 mile from my car. Good thing I left my car at 6:30am or I would have been really rushed to get to the starting line in time. Hated the long walk BACK to my car....I was sooo sore. Did some yoga stretching next to the car before I headed home. Once again, B'more 10 Miler put on a great race with tons of Baltimore Police lining the race course and lots of folks cheering us on - especially at the end!!! Last updated: 2012-03-20 12:00 AM
