Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am and took a shower then grabbed some breakfast. Had a PB on wheat, banana and 20oz bottle of water. Waited for my g/f and some friends from our kickball team to arrive at the house around 6am and then we were off to M&T Bank Stadium which is only 10mins away.
Event warmup:

Not Too Much. It was really cold due to a cold front moving in (40degrees) so when we parked in the lot, we found some friends from the Triathlon club and hung out with them inside the cars with the heat on. Walked the g/f and others to their buses since they were running the relay and then went over to watch the full start. Went to the bathroom and then walked over to the Half Marathon start and met up with my buddy who was running his first half and I agreed to pace with him so he didnt run it alone. A few minutes of searching for him through 14,000 ppl and then after we met up, stretched a bit and got into our corral.

Comments:

This was the first time I have run the Baltimore Marathon. Alot of people talk about how hilly the course is (they even put the slogan "what hills dont kill us only make us stronger" on the actual medal lol) but I didnt think they were that bad at all. Maybe its because I am 20lbs lighter then my last half or I am in better running shape but I didnt think they were bad at all. Anyway, I ran this with a friend at his pace because neither of us wanted to run alone and I knew he could not keep up with my pace so it was an easy run through my hometown. Our plan was to run a 4min-walk 1min which we did the entire race. Felt very easy and kinda hard to keep a slower pace but it was alot of fun running with my buddy and with the walk/run strategy, my legs felt fresh the entire race. I have never done a race with so many people (26,000) so that was interesting for sure but the way it was organized, I did not feel congested or crowded at all. I really liked the route and the crowd support was amazing! tons of people in all the neighborhoods come out to cheer on the racers. I loved running through Patterson Park because I run around it often since I live in that area and I saw a few people I know spectating. I saw some amazing signs during the race but the best one had to be "Your the Best Around" and it had a picture of the Karate Kid underneath. At about the 10mile mark we ran into the Waverly neighborhood which had amazing crown support. I have heard that the beverage stand guy in this part of the race hands out beers and true enough he did. very nice guy who buys a couple cases of Baltimore's very own Natty Boh and poors them into cups for whatever racers want them. I of course had 3 and I realized right away it was a bad decision but I didnt care, I wasnt running a fast pace and there was only 5K left. A few times during the run, my friend hit the wall and had to walk and I tried to motivate him through it but he got mad at me so I decided to leave it alone and just walk when he needed to stop and walk. Coming down the home stretch and running through both of my favorite sports teams stadiums to hundreds of loud and crazy spectators was awesome!! Me and my friend finished together and there was a nice finisher pic of both of us crossing the finish line at the same time. OVerall it was the best Half Marathon I have ever done and it was just an amazing time!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Well...maybe pick up another beer or 2 in Waverly :)

Warm down:

Crossed the finish line and got my space blanket and medal (big honking medal which is awesome). I wasnt really hungry and I didnt want to wait in the really really long food lines so I went to the finishers area and met up with my g/f, her relay team and a whole bunch of friends who also did the race. Had a few beers then went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. I honestly think I could have PR on this course if I would have ran it at my pace but I was much happier to have a friend to run with at a more conservative pace.

Event comments:

This was an amazing race! I cannot begin to explain how awesome it was. Very very well organized, great SWAG and a great course. Tons of volunteers who were amazing, plenty of parking and bathrooms. I will definately be back again (but not next year because of a friends wedding that day :( ). I highly recommend this race to everyone.
