Run
Comments: Went out conservatively, and tried to push on the downhill sections. Came through the first loop at 12min. I wanted to finish the 2 loops under 25min to stay ahead of last year's time, and just made it. What would you do differently?: I still need to figure out how to push myself beyond feeling comfortable. Transition 1
Comments: This was my first transition with clipless pedals and cycling shoes. My T1 was 16sec slower than last year, but I hoped to make up the difference with any added speed from the new setup. What would you do differently?: Practice more transitions with cycling shoes. Bike
Comments: 1.23km/hr faster than last year, and a few places better, even with a headwind for about half of the course (granted, there was a nice tailwind on a downhill section that didn't hurt). Again, I felt a lot more in the race. If I can get up to 33-34km/hr this year for a sprint, I'll be happy. This was a good start. What would you do differently?: I'm happy with my progress. This is the fastest I've gone over the distance. Transition 2
Comments: 16sec slower than last year. I unclipped my right shoe early, but tripped up a little when trying to unclip the left. I don't think this cost too much time, but I definitely need to improve my dismount. When I racked my bike, I couldn't find my hat, and probably spent about 5sec looking for it before giving up and going without. After the race, I saw that someone had moved my backpack and hat, so they must have been in their way. What would you do differently?: Practice, and make sure my transition area doesn't interfere with anyone else. Especially for a duathlon, I don't need to have my backpack there. Run
Comments: I wanted to go under 13min for this loop to beat last year's lap time, which I did, but really wanted to get under 1:15 for the race. What would you do differently?: Run harder. Post race
Event comments: I improved from 1:17:53 and 62/148 last year to 1:16:17 and 51/157 this year, so I'm happy overall. The race organizers did a great job, and the volunteers were awesome. There were some great prizes after, including a sweet wheelset. The Southeast Storm triathlon club started the Tri season off well, as usual. Can't wait for next year! Slept in a little, and woke up at 6:50am. Didn't get home from the drive-in until almost 2:00am.
Biked to the race, then jogged for a few minutes. I cleaned and oiled my chain last week, and it was working much more smoothly on the way to the race.
