Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:00 and ate a big bowl of cereal, drank a bit of coffee, got ready and rode down to the start. Due to the extreme winds (25-35 mph) we didn't have to check in our bikes the day before as originally planned. Thanks to Joy's Aunt and Uncle whose vacation condo we stayed at was only about a 1/2 mile from the start which was nice and convenient.
Event warmup:

They decided to cancel the swim due to the high winds which was causing rip tides and I believe we heards there was a slight case of red tide. This was very disappointing for me as I had high hopes for breaking the 5 hour barrier this year at this distance and this was going to be only shot. I jhad other races leading up to this one, but this race was definitely by "A" race that all of the training was leading up to. So, no swim and no true run to T1 which has become my best discipline:) To warm up, Joy and I jogged about a 1/2 mile, walked around and stretched for about 10 minutes or so as we waited for the pro's to go off on their 1.5 mile run which the race director had decided to replace the swim with. For us age groupers, we just did a bike-run which started with a short run to our bikes from the entrance into transition like we were coming out of the water. I think cancelling the swim was the right thing to do, albeit disappointing.

Comments:

Quick run to bike from transition entrance, sunglasses and helmet on, run bike out and did a flying mount as I geared up for a fast start to the bike as the first 25 miles were with the wind.

Comments:

Tough bike....the first 25 miles or so were fun as I was averaging about 25 mph. Then we made the turn and the winds were no longer favorable. Over the next 30 miles, I saw my average speed drop to 21.7 mph. Still, I was happy with my bike. I pushed the effort, but felt like I kept it in check even with the strong winds.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Pretty good T2. Didn't rush it too much as I was having to discard my trash from my Honey Stinger chews and Clif bar that I had eaten on the bike and then pocket my fresh package of chews for the run.

Comments:

Felt really good at first. My goal was to keep around 7:15's and I was hitting that for the most part until about mile 6 and the wheels started falling off, but I was still keeping 8:00's until about mile 10 when my legs started to cramp which has never happened before. I stopped and tried to stretch and my hamstrings totally seized up. I decided to walk a bit, to see if they would get better and after a minute or 2 I would start jogging. I could jog for a few minutes before I would have to walk for a minute as my hamstring kept cramping. I also couldn't stomach anymore chews. Almost threw up a couple of times, but I was able to hold it down. I was afraid if I threw up, any nutrition that I did still have in my would be gone I wold risk not finishing. So, I pressed on. I was able to carry a very light jog to the finish where my son was waiting for me to run down the finishing chute. Very cool and totally got my mind of the suffering that I had just gone threw. After crossing the finish line I had to sit as my legs were just about to gove up on me. A couple of minutes later I tried to stand up and my leg seized up again...very painful. I sat back down and after stretching it a bit, I was able to get up and limp over to our little cheering section and wait for Joy to come through.
What would you do differently?:

My run fitness was not where it should have been due to battling injuries throughout the year and it showed. I don't think I really did anything wrong during the race, I just think it was the best I could do on the minimal run training I had.
Post race
Warm down:

Waited for Joy to cross, and then we both got a massage:) We quickly realized that Joy had gotten 2nd in her age group. We went back to the condo, took showers and then went back to the finish line for her to get her award, which was a huge medal, a box of Powerbar chews, a 2 bottle fuel belt and a $15 gift certificate to the REV3 store there onsite which she used to buy a new bento box.

Run Training.

Event comments:

Other than the cancelled swim (which was due to reasons not under their control) this was an awesome race and we plan on doing it again next year. From the Little Rev Adventure race the day before to the swag bag which consisted of a long sleeve Tshirt, a Headsweats REV3 Florida visor, a pair of Blue Seventy goggles and more. All that and killer awards if your good enough to place in your age group. Not to mention the food afterwards was provided by Sharkys and it was awesome. Grilled Mahi, dirty rice tossed with andoulli sausage and grilled chicken, ceasar salad, cajun style bbq pulled pork and garlic bread.
