Swim
Comments: Where did that swim come from?! I could tell I was pushing the pace hard immediately, trying to stay with the 16-20M fish ahead of me. I was 6 in my wave, and 11th overall. Talk about some fast swimmers in this heat! Overall, this was by far my fastest OWS swim to date. My navigation was perfect (finally...), rounded buoys great, and beat my projected time by almost 2 minutes. What would you do differently?: Push even harder?! I think having the speedboats in front of me helped me push harder than I normally would. And I've been going to the OWS weekly @ SMP since June. Transition 1
Comments: Again, I was in the furthest corner away from the bike entrance/exit, and the long run from the lake didn't help my time. The only way I could imagine speeding up T1 would be riding with my shoes clipped in to begin with. I just don't feel comfortable with SPD pedals. They clip out too easily. 40th overall, 3rd in AG. What would you do differently?: Run harder, beg to swap transition spots? Bike
Comments: Good pace for me on the hills. Improvement of over 1.2 mph on the 2 laps. First lap, I was immediately passed by someone in my AG on the dam hill, but I got him on the downhill and never saw him again. First lap I pushed possibly a bit too hard. Average was just above 20mph. I backed off a bit on the second loop to save something for the run, especially the last mile. What would you do differently?: Control my initial output on the first lap. I'm glad I was going hard, but I think I could have conserved a bit for a harder 2nd lap, instead of letting up before the run. Transition 2
Comments: Long run from bike enter to rack, and rack to run exit. Sucks, but I don't think this would have been quicker unless I was in a different location. I'm good with the time. Overall: 42nd AG: 2nd What would you do differently?: See T1. Run
Comments: Definitely did a bit too much pacing. My plan was to average a 7:45 pace, except on the dam hill, and the longer uphill that takes you out of the trails. My goal was to average a 8/mi pace, so I'm glad I beat that, but I had ALOT left for the uphill sprint finish. according to the garmin, I averaged 5:50/mi pace the final .3 miles, which to me is a bit more left than I wanted. Again I'm glad I beat my goal, didn't blow up on the run, but think I could have pushed it a bit more on the course. What would you do differently?: Conserve initially, then let it rip. Hell, it's only 2.4 miles.... Post race
Warm down: walked, found my family, chocolate milk, coke, nasty banana. I skipped out on the pizza and taco bell, a first for me. What limited your ability to perform faster: my heavy bike... haha. I'm pleased with my results! about a 6 min improvement from last year. And I haven't done anything speed-specific for about 2 months! I looking forward to getting faster! Event comments: Great local race, well organized, tons of volunteers. Definitely the best race I've seen for your first triathlon. Tons of people on mtb and cruisers. I love this race, and I will be back again! Last updated: 2012-03-27 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:45, ate some oatmeal, sipped on some EFS, loaded up the car and headed to SMP. Parked pretty close to the start of the 20 min walk to transition. Once I got there, I realized I basically had the worst transition rack in the entire race, making for some longer transition times. Oh well...
Set up transition, got some "advice" from some other guy in my AG about how to rack my bike. I have an ISM saddle with a groove for the bar, he said to go off the saddle tip because when people exit the swim, they will knock my bike off before I get to it. My response: I'll be done with the swim before anyone... haha. Quick 5 min ride to get my gearing set, 5 min run to get the legs turning over, and then a 45 min wait till my heat went off.
