Swim
Comments: I felt really good about this swim. I lost about 15-20 seconds getting stuck behind slower swimmers - annoying but not really that bothersome. My actual in-pool time was right on 7 minutes. What would you do differently?: 1) Learn how to swim between two slower people. 2) Eat more for breakfast, I was feeling hungry before the start. Transition 1
Comments: Cold day so transition consisted of towel dry; put on jacket, gloves, and ear band; helmet; sunglasses. I had not practiced getting on the bike with the shoes already on the pedals so I also put my shoes on in transition. What would you do differently?: Remember to grab the Gu. (Or, plan different nutrition.) Will work on getting on the bike with shoes already attached. Bike
Comments: Decent bike route. The first 1/3 of the loop has a steep hill. Then it's flat, then the last half is gentle down hill and smooth roads so speed was easy. The headwind was on the part but it wasn't strong. The second loop was much easier for me. What would you do differently?: 1) Remember my Gu in transition (or have it attached to bike already, or do a different nutrition strategy). I could tell at the end of the bike that I wasn't in great shape. 2) I need to work on hills. 3) It's hard for me to use my water bottles on this bike. I either need more practice, or need different bottle setup. I was a little down on hydration because of this. Transition 2
Comments: Warmed up enough that I took off the jacket, gloves, ear band. Bike shoes off, running shoes on. I didn't put socks on, and didn't put any body glide on my feet. Visor, Gu, small water bottle. What would you do differently?: Either wear socks or put body glide on my feet (here or before) - I got blisters. Otherwise good. Run
Comments: Started rough because I had forgotten the Gu to take on the bike. That plus uphill to start was really rough. I took the Gu and drank half my bottle pretty early. Walked much of the bigger hill. Took some gatorade at the aid station. After that the Gu kicked in and I was able to run the entire last half and felt good. Set a PR for a 5K, but still the slowest runner in my age group :-( What would you do differently?: Remember the Gu! Wish I could run faster.... Post race
Warm down: Took a bit of food at the finish line, then sat and tried to win a door prize (no luck). Once the podiums started being announced I got my clothes changed and packed up the car. I needed to trade my shirt so I stayed til the very end, but it was kind of fun. What limited your ability to perform faster: Very slow runner. Nutrition not the best. Event comments: This was a great race with very good volunteers and good traffic/intersection control. Way more entrants than usual, but that's probably because of the nice weather. Packed bag and car (bike) night before. Got up at 5:15am, got dressed, made breakfast to eat on the road (PB toast sandwich and chocolate milk). Made sure I had everything packed. Dad was able to come and that was really great.
Left house at 6a, got to transition about 6:35. Didn't take long to set up, then had 45 minutes to kill before the race meeting. Got marked and timing chip. Went inside to check out the pool. It was pretty darn cold (40s) and I was wearing flip-flops so my toes were frozen.
The pre-race meeting was outside. Aaron did a good job of getting everyone pumped up (being a huge goofball, it was funny). Then we all went inside. Since Dad was with me I didn't have to take off my warm my clothes until getting inside, which was very nice. I warmed up in the pool a little bit, really just enough to get wet and put my swim cap on.
