Swim
Comments: The water was so friggin cold I probably won't see parts of my body for a week. This was due to a triple witching of recent cold weather, rain, and the City of Batavia running the well to put some water in the quarry. Couldn't breathe or put my face in the water for the first 200m. When I aclimated for the second lap, it was so crowded that I was crawling all over people and just decided to take it easy. What would you do differently?: Take the outside lane, like I was told to do by my coach! Transition 1
Comments: Overall pretty smooth. Long distance to transition area. Socks and base layer a little sticky, but pretty good. Forgot to put bike shorts on, but turned out I didn't need them anyway. Just glad to be out of the water! Sucked down a powergel and off I went. What would you do differently?: Not much. It went pretty smooth. Bike
Comments: Felt like I was flying. Higher cadence really paid off. Passed a lot of people on tri bikes and felt pretty good about it. Passed many more than passed me. Ran with a couple of guys on tri bikes that kept pace with me on flats, ran a little faster on decents, and I was stronger on inclines. Hill training paid off and was able to finish out ahead of my buds in the end. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Cadence and shifting were great and even though the pace was harder than solo, felt great at end. Transition 2
Comments: Very smooth transition. Fast in/out. Sucked down another powergel with water and felt sloshy for the first 1/4 mile. What would you do differently?: Start running in the right direction out of the transition. Cost me about 20 seconds on the run. Run
Comments: Legs sluggish and feet/inner thighs tight for first 1/2 mile. Thought I started about 10 minute pace but reached 1 mile in 9 minutes. Felt great through rest of run. No heavy breathing! Guess I sandbagged the run a little. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder after mile 1. I had plenty of energy left at end of race and could have probably finished a minute or 2 faster. Post race
Warm down: Walk, stretch hamstrings/quads. What limited your ability to perform faster: Cold water and lane selection in swim, taking a little too comfortable pace on the last 3 miles of the run. Event comments: Traffic control, drink stations, and volunteers were awesome. Pretty well organized. The swim portion was a disaster with the water temperature and sandbars, but it turned out for the best. Nobody drowned as a result. Last updated: 2006-05-15 12:00 AM
