Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am and got dressed. I had half a bagel with a little peanut butter and a banana. Drink a cup of water with that then got the family up and moving. The wife and two oldest came along to cheer me on.
Event warmup:

We walked from our parking spot in Rosslyn and then hung out around my corral. I then did my normal lunge matrix and then it was party time!

Comments:

This was my first Marathon and I wanted to make sure to enjoy it. I didn't go out to fast which I was worried I might do. My first mile was actually the slowest of the first 18. I felt great even when I saw my family around mile 11. I was on pace for 3:43 at that point and was feeling strong. I hit Haids point and pushed through the wind to keep pace and that is probably what eventually brought on the pain that was the last 6.2 miles. At about mile 18 I started feeling pain growing. I wasn't out of breath so I felt as if I had plenty left but the legs got heavier and heavier. At mile 19 I had to pee, it was actually a little painful like those moments when you have to pee really bad and every movement hurts. I don't know if it was a good idea but I stopped and felt some relief but my legs may of tightened up a little during that time. I felt like I had to stretch from there on out. Mile 20 and on was tough. My goal was just to run to each water station but each one seemed to be farther and farther away. At this point the only thing keeping me going was knowing my family was waiting for me at the end. I still had a chance to make it under 4 hours which was my original hope. Then came the crowds at then end! I was NOT going to quit on that hill! My wife actually said I looked good coming into the finish. Inside though I was hurting I never wished more for a finish line then this race. I was so exhilarated to finish and all the Marines lined up shaking your hand was awesome and then receiving your medal from them was cool as well.
What would you do differently?:

I think I realize that I need to run the distance before I run the distance. Every time I have run a race and not done the distance my legs ache more. I also think I would reserve a little more energy if I run into winds like that again on a race like this. I did leave it all out on the course though.
Post race
Warm down:

I just tried to keep walking until I could meet up with my family. Gatorade recovery is nasty at least the flavor I had. I knew I need some protein so I downed it and ate a banana and finished off the water as well. I stretched a little afterwards as long as it was standing up. I felt if I sat down I may not get up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Again I think a little more running closer to the distance would have helped a little bit. I don't think I will use anything chewable anymore. I seemed to get winded while trying to eat them. I used in training but I was running a little slower and usually walked. I think I will stick to gels.

Event comments:

Awesome crowd support and the course really is a nice course through the DC area. Once the soreness and pain subsides I will think about running it again. If you haven't ran this race I think you should.

Course: I am glad it didn't have the down and back that many complained about before. It looped through Crystal City which had a crowd the whole way through and their cheering is what kept me going! The course was awesome as far as I was concerned. I really enjoyed and the crowd support was unbelievable. The Marines were awesome and inspiring!
