Swim
Comments: Water was cold - I heard someone say the water was over 70 but I could believe it. Regardless the swim felt poor for me. I don't know if it was the cold, or my lack of swimming leading up to the race, but I just didn't feel comfortable swimming. I might have gone too hard at the beginning causing my HR to spike, but not sure why I felt so uncomfortable. Alcatraz is next week and I pray I don't feel the way I did today. What would you do differently?: More OWS training Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit got stuck on my heel but other than that felt my T1 was adequate What would you do differently?: Practice taking off wetsuit Bike
Comments: I chose not to mount my aero bottle since I thought it would be overkill along with my normal bottle. I should have gone with just the aero bottle so I wouldn't have had to get out of aero to hydrate. Overall though the bike felt great. I forgot that my garmin in multisport mode does not show mph so I wasn't sure how I was pacing. Also miffed my HR wasn't working. The course was relatively flat and overall felt good on the bike. I probably could've hammered it a little harder but it was a good pace for me What would you do differently?: Check and configure garmin prior to race Transition 2
Comments: Fastest T1 to date, though this was smaller race with a smaller T1. Chose to not put socks on which caused some issues during the run. Grabbed a gu, race belt and took off. Run
Comments: PR my 5K, not just in sprints but for all races. Excited that I was able to keep such a fast pace and still feel great at the end. As I mentioned before, I chose not to wear socks in my newish Zoots. Shortly after the turnaround, I started feeling something on my heels, as if the timing chip strap was rubbing. The pain got worse but I knew I was close to the end so I figured I'd run through it. After the race I realized I chaffed both heels pretty good. I'm a little surprised by this since through I haven't run without socks in these shoes before, I've run about 100 miles without ever having this problem. I also put on yanks for this race and don't know if that could've caused it. Overall though I'm happy about the performance. I just hope it'll heel in time for my next race. What would you do differently?: Put socks on. Could've picked up the pace at the end. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, grabbed a burrito and some water. I had to wait for the last biker to finish before I could get into transition. This is a first for me since usually I don't finish so early in the race! What limited your ability to perform faster: Could've swam faster had I felt more comfortable. Nutrition was spot on and did not feel dehydrated. I think the course is great for beginners as well as faster athletes looking to fine tune parts of their game. I went into the race knowing I wanted to get some work in before Alcatraz. I didn't necessarily want to go all out, but knew it would be tough for me not to "race". In the end, I'm super happy about my results. I think the additional training I've gone through this year has really translated into an improved race. Event comments: Liked the burritos at the end. Packet pickup was a bit chaotic but the RD reacted quickly and got additional people to help out. The lines quickly diminished though they still needed to delay the start time 10 minutes. Woke up at 4:30, had a pb bagel, some Gatorade and took off. Parked on the street away from the park parking, always get tricked from people parking well in advanced of the actual location. Regardless, it was about a 10 minute walk. Picked up packet, setup transition and got in the water to get myself acclimated.
