Pre-race routine:

Arrived late, so ended up parking some way from the start and from then after I was under pressure to get registered and my transition set up to my satisfaction. Had a banana, coffee and oatmeal on the way to the race which was perfect for me. Slept pretty well also
Event warmup:

Warm up was the cycle down to transition/registration carrying track pump and transition bags i.e. no warm up at all. Lesson learned here!
Swim
  • 16m 43s
  • 580 yards
  • 02m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Heart rate is through the roof after swim which is killing the first 20 minutes on my bike, plus setting me in a chase mode for the rest of the race rather than being more relaxed and comfortable.

Goggles malfunctioned due to arriving late and not being properly prepared and had to stop to empty water out of them. Also had a big problem with fogging so couldnt sight properly at all

What would you do differently?:

More training
Arrive earlier to fix goggles problem
Apply defogger!
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Should have been quicker here but was out of breath after swim so struggled to get breathing right.
Also pressed wrong button on my Garmin Forerunner which caused me to waste time trying to reset it again on the bike
What would you do differently?:

Press the right button!
Bike
  • 56m 45s
  • 16 miles
  • 16.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Heart rate was way too high due to the swim which shows in the overall time. Took me far too long to find my legs and the race had passed me by at that stage.
Made a water bottle malfunction as I had brought an old bottle with a broken cap. Had to unscrew the cap to get water. I also had ice in it which i had to flick out to get to the water. Ended up that I had a third of the water I planned due to silly mistake, along with the wasted time on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Fix my swim and get some more miles in and don't bring a non-functioning water bottle anywhere near a race bag!
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Transition was bit slow for my liking which was due to the water bottle malfunction and pausing to catch my breath. Feet were cold, which meant i had to struggle a little to put my shoes on which I had not banked on.
Run
  • 25m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good at the start of this and quickly reeled in a few people. When i checked my pace i felt i could do a good run. Got running with another guy and we ran together for about 2 miles. Felt my achilles ache with about 2 miles gone and that really killed my time. Think there was another 2 mins i couldve knocked off my run if id kept up my pace
What would you do differently?:

Bad swim and hydration on the bike probably influenced my achilles tightening
Post race
Warm down:

Cycled back to the car about a mile

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor training
Bad planning
Poor hydration
Inexperience

Event comments:

This is a great race, well organized and plenty of volunteers to help. Love the course as it is not a beach race of which there are many in Florida. Disappointed with my performance but it gave me a very fair assessment of where I am right now.

Performance: Bad
I am a terrible swimmer and had clearly not spent enough time in the water. It is my weakest discipline so really need to focus on this in the coming weeks. As in previous races I came out of the water with my heart rate jackhammering. When I started my Garmin Forerunner I realized my heart rate was hitting 180 bpm.
Suit: None
Course: 3 sided rectangular swim in water that was perfect. The start is through some reeds under the water which are fine and present no problem but for the fact I had my Garmin Forerunner velcro strap on, which has a plastic bracket for the watch to clip into on the run. I had to stop after a few strokes to rip the reeds that had stuck to my watch as it was restricting me - hopefully just bad luck.

Course: Do love this course as it's one of the rare times you get hills in Florida. It's tough in that sense if you are a Floridian and used to pancake flat roads, but if you've any climbing experience it shouldn't be too bad. It is energy sapping due to the non stop rollers
