Swim
Comments: Swim out to the bouy was relatively good. Rounded the bouy really well, but i went too hard left and found myself off alone about 25 yards to the left of the pack. I seemed to keep heading left every time i corrected to the right. The real problem on the way in was i had zero opportunity to draft. What would you do differently?: Check navigation and try to stay in the pack after rounding the bouy to take advantage of drafting. Transition 1
Comments: Skipped the wetsuit - it was too hot today. I really tried to have a good T1, but it didn't really work out so well. I couldn't find my Tri shirt so went shirtless and figured i'd just throw a cycling jersey on - full zip front should be easy. NOT! put it on inside out the first time, then flipped it back. Both times my shirt kept sticking to me - full zip not much easier when wet. Finally got myself together, ran to thru the timing gate with my bike to the mount area (cause this is a race right?) Jump on my bike BAM!!! Missed the pedal completely and slammed to the ground. Now i have a calf cramp!! Crap. Okay, work it out for a few seconds, get up, get on the bike. Start pedaling! Nothing - crap chain fell off! Okay. dismount, chain on - off i go! What would you do differently?: 1. No shirt changes in transition. Bad idea Everything else, running, jumping, etc, all good ideas but very poor execution. Bike
Comments: I really felt like i was in the race. stayed with a pack of 4 or 5 riders for most of the race. They pulled away from me toward the end of the 2nd loop, but i ended up catching them in the last stretch and passing them. The only problem, there was one more rider in front of them that slowed way down on the corner into T2 and i couldn't seem to get around her until i got off my bike and ran passed her. UGH!! It's such a wide road, not sure why i couldn't get passed her. What would you do differently?: Had some issues with gear changes. Hills were okay, but not great. Better on the second loop, i went for bigger gears and switching between standing and sitting. Seemed to get me up the hills a little faster and easier. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty decent T2, but i pushed hard to pass everyone at the end of the bike so i had to walk a bit to avoid calf cramps. What would you do differently?: spin the legs a little coming into T2 instead of pushing. Run
Comments: Started REEAALL SSLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWWW!! Didn't want to cramp right away, so i walked, then jogged really slow and really, really, really slow small steps to get up the first hill. Once i got over the first hill, i started to loosen up and run more free. I know this from running this race before. From there on in i felt really good and felt like i got better and better as the race went on. I caught back up and even passed some of the runners that passed me in the first mile. (passing runners is something new to me). I was kind of disappointed with my time, i really expected it to be better from the way i felt running. Maybe just took too long to get going. What would you do differently?: Figure out how to get up to speed a little quicker off the bike. Perhaps some brick workouts are in my future. Post race
Warm down: A little bit of stretching after i took a nice jump in the lake to cool down. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bad navigation on the swim and no drafting on the way in. Bad T1 and bike start. Inability to come off the bike and start running without calves cramping. Event comments: I hung around for much longer than usual. Had 2 PBRs and a burger. Chatted with a few people from the swim clinic and some of their friends. This was probably my best effort at this race, not necessarily the best result, but i'm starting to focus on the transitions more. I'm just going to have to practice to get better at execution. Pack up, pick up my bike from the shop, sit in traffic on I-95, drive like crazy up 91.
Wait in a long line to register for the race. Beautiful day, pretty big field. Line moved along quickly tho :)
5' run, quick loop on the bike (good thing - new brakes and they are way more touchy. I was over due for brakes). Nice long warm-up swim, probably about 10'.
