Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am planning to get out the door at 4:30am. was close leaving house at 4:40. Decided to hold off on coffee since I have never drank before a race. Ate tow power bars, banana and drank 24oz. of lemon-lime Perform which is my planned IMWI breakfast. Got to race with plenty of time to get registered and set up.
Event warmup:

Did a quick 10 minute bike ride and light job from car to T1
Swim
  • 29m 15s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went really well. I decided to just get in there and battle it out to simulate a mass start at IM. Felt comfortable and confident. Hit all the bouy with tight turns and sighted great. The only weird part was the run between laps. I have never done this before and HATE running in sand. I felt my HR skyrocket while running and wanted to walk so bad. Once I got back in the water it was like I just instantly settled down. very strange as I have never preferred swimming to running.
What would you do differently?:

A little better preview of swim course. Was unsure exactly where the water exit was. no big deal but might have shaved a little time off.
Transition 1
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

T1 went pretty good - no major issues
Bike
  • 1h 16m 3s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Going out was with tail wind and I was hammering it. Every time I looked down at computer I was over 23 MPH and still felt comfortable. Coming back was a strong head wind but still kept good pace. Only got passed by about 4 people at start of ride but then held my ground for rest of race. At turn around I counted and was in 34th overall place. My cornering and turning was TERRIBLE. There was some very long sharp turns and one of them I actually went off road but was able to maintain control. Guy directing said "bunch of people have done that today". Not sure if he was just making me feel better - haha.
What would you do differently?:

Work on cornering and turning
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Good transition
Run
  • 53m 25s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

went out VERY FAST. When I hit mile 2 I think I was under 14:00. RFP'd it for the last two miles but got passed by someone in my age group in last 1/4 mile. Didn't realize I was leading 35-39 AG and might have pushed it harder if I knew that - who knows. I really had nothing left in the tank especially on the last big hill in last mile.
What would you do differently?:

Gone out a littel slower. i did this with no GPS and my watch was acting up so it was all on perceived effort and how I felt.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran from the rain

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing

Event comments:
