Pre-race routine:

Drove from Austin to Brenham at 5:30am and had to pick up my packet onsite first. Had plenty of time to spare!
Event warmup:

Light stretching, and a 1/3mile walk to the start.

Comments:

Started FAST out of the gate. Even though I was somewhat close to the front I still had to move around some slow/walking folks. Ran the first mile in 7:07 which was 30seconds faster than goal pace, but I felt good. After the first mile the course turned upwards and a good sized hill stretched the field out so it was passing time! After two miles (which may not have been marked properly) I was 14:24 so I said okay lets go for a PR and put the hammer down....which I would come to pay for at the end.

I felt pretty strong until the last 3/4mile when a 1/2mile hill presents itself and this is where I think my PR went out the window. I just didn't have the legs to power up this last hill like earlier in the race, though once over it I kicked somewhat strong to the end.
What would you do differently?:

This wasn't an "A" race for me so I didn't do any taper at all. I moved my normal 80min planned run from saturday (race day) to Thursday, so I might have had some tired legs. My mid week runs are just starting to get to 6miles total..including warmup/cool down, so I'm sure I'll break my PR at some point this year.

I would have remembered to bring my Ironman Perform drink in the car with me to sip on the way to the race as well.

Not sure if a real "warmup" would have helped.

Have a race plan and stick with it. I probably could have taken down my PR which I only missed by 7 seconds, but I started out way too fast. I also think I'll throw in some hill work to make sure I can power up any remaning hills.

Considering I only missed the PR by 7 seconds it was a good race.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, gronola bar, walked to my car and put ipod up. The race was sponsored by Blue Bell soooo....that meant ICE CREAM....yes I know it doesn't do me any good for my weight goals though!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably moving my weekly long run to the Thursday before the race. I'm sure I had some tired legs because of this. It wasn't an "A" race though, so I'm very happy with my time. Better pacing early would have helped too.

Event comments:

This is a small town race, but gets a good crowd. Blue Bell Ice Cream is the sponsor so you get ice cream afterwards....and it's Blue Bell!!! My only gripe was with the course routing of the 5K at the end. They had the 5k race rejoin the 10K race with 1 1/4 mile to the finish....not sure this is such a good idea as the faster 10K racers were thrown in with some slower 5K folks.

Overall a good time though!
