Comments:

Wow. Where to start? Brutal conditions. I am in the best overall shape of my life right now. Not best run shape, but best overall. I knew Boston wouldn't be a pr, but I still thought I could run my 4th sub 3 marathon. I started out conservatively with the plan to pick up the pace if I felt good. First mile was around 7:00. I gradually picked up the pace until the half where I was at 1:30:20.
The first half felt difficult, but not too difficult, however, that would quickly change. I made sure to hydrate well-drinking at every station and even some in between, but I still felt thirsty and dry-mouthed.. Gave many, many high fives during the first half.
Mile 15 or so is when I realized the next 10 miles would be hell and they were.
I saw my wife and step son, going up heartbreak hill. Kissed my wife, told them I was toast and forged ahead.
The downhills at Boston really wear on you. I lnew this going in, but for the second time in three years, I underestimated them.
Boston College fired me up for a mile or so. I gave the students high fives and hollered a few times. The energy was short last though.
I still thought I could beat 3:05 and BQ. That thought faded as well. Walk breaks and near cramps slowed me the last few miles.
The turn onto Boylston is an incredible feeling even when you are struggling.
Finally came across at 3:08:52-10 minutes slower than last year.
Anyway, I can't wait until next year.

What would you do differently?:

drink more?
Post race
Warm down:

walk back to hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat, run mileage in training.

Event comments:

Boston is the best.
