Pre-race routine:

First time with this race doing packet pickup morning of the race. Alarm at 3:45am - out the house before 4 - and to Batavia just about 5am. Unfortunately - ended up in transition just about as far away from swim out and bike out as possible - although close to run out
Event warmup:

Jogged a little. Wanted to get in the water - but not enough time
Swim
  • 06m 40s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Batavia is more like an aqua job - on the far side of the quarry - water is too shallow to stroke - so you have to run or dolphin dive - but makes it very good for a newbie or for somebody who is worried about the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Estimate my time better on the entry! Numbers were assigned based on estimated swim time - I was nowhere close (put 10 minutes on entry...) Makes for a long wait...
Transition 1
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

As mentioned before - bike was about as far as you could get away from the swim. Gravelly parking lot and a long run = put your bike shoes on first! Adds a little time to transition - but much nicer on the feet. Training for longer distance races - so was not focused on quick transitions (and I accomplished that!)
What would you do differently?:

Better transition spot would be nice - but partly it was due to my race number. Could work to make this significantly quicker
Bike
  • 41m 54s
  • 14.7 miles
  • 21.05 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the bike - was only passed by 1 rider - passed over a hundred. There's more top-end speed there - but averaging almost 3 mph faster than the last time I did this course - very pleased
What would you do differently?:

Use aero hammock or speed bottle instead of only behind the seat bottles
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Quicker transition - with majority of time spent from timing line to rack...
What would you do differently?:

Same as above - get a better spot in transition
Run
  • 31m 15s
  • 4.1 miles
  • 07m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Started to really warm up. Tried cruising first three miles or so - then picked it up a bit.
What would you do differently?:

See a "6" in the distance - chase it down thinking it was an age group competitor - only to find out the first number was a 3 and not a 4! Run felt good.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around - Muscle Milk, banana and some carbs

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Specific training for a shorter triathlon - all work has been focused on long distance

Event comments:

The swim is unique - but good people in Batavia - and a nice course. Great course for beginners - especially the swim and run - but advanced athletes can really put the hammer down to try and challenge how hard they can go.
